The report that HBO MaxsBatgirl was canceled after it had already been planned, written, shot, and supposedly test-screened has sent shockwaves through the film industry. The film was reported to have raised $75 million, with $15 million more invested on top of that due to Covid. And Warner Bros. new leadership is just putting the title on the shelf.
The main reason for the film's quality is not the movie's mid-size budget, although that is a discussion for another time. It seems to make more financial sense for the company to put the film aside and write it off than to launch it on HBO Max, which was the original intention.)
ButBatgirl is far from the only DC Comics project that had been in the works at HBO Max. At least one of these was already shot:Blue Beetle, which featuresCobra KaisXolo Mariduena as the titular character in the 2005 reboot of The Batman. Another was discussed last summer. Jurnee Smollett was expected to reprise her role as Black Canary from the previous reboot ofThe Batman, as well as a series set in Gotham Citys' Arkham Asylum
There has been no confirmation of the state of these projects so far, which is causing some fans to become apprehensive.
The Flash, a massive tentpole film starring Ezra Miller, has yet to be released by Warner Bros., which has decided to keep it. Theyre still considering delaying the release of another nearly $100 film inBatgirl. So who knows what will happen next?
