Don't Bring These Recalled Sunscreens to Your Next Beach Day

Don't Bring These Recalled Sunscreens to Your Next Beach Day ...

Before you go to the beach, make sure you inspect your collection of sunscreen products. On July 29, Edgewell Personal Care issued a voluntary nationwide recall of three batches of Banana Boats Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30 for containing trace amounts of benzene, which is a carcinogen, so you may want to get used to the beach hat look for the remainder of the summer. Here's what to look out for, how to get a refund, and more.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled a portion of Banana Boat products after an internal review of the company. Three of the company's Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30 samples contained unexpected levels of the carcinogen from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can for the same reason. Procter & Gamble also recalled several spray sunscreens in July 2021 for the same reason.

According to the Banana Boat website's recall page on July 29, the aerosol sunscreens were not recalled because customers had reported adverse reactions to the sunscreens, but rather as a result of an abundance of caution. Shops should remove any affected Hair & Scalp aerosol sunscreens from their shelves immediately.

If youre someone who cant stand to walk to the beach without a bright red scalp and a tender head to match, youre probably wondering if your Banana Boat Hair & Scalp products are safe from the recall. Here's all you need to know about it.

Affected Products

All three products named in the recall are 6-ounce aerosol samples of Banana Boats Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30 according to the company's statement.

How Do You Know If Your Product Has Been Recalled?

Just because you have a batch of Hair & Scalp Spray in your beach bag, doesnt mean it has been affected. To check whether or not your scalp sunscreen has been included in the recall, youll need to remove it from the bottom of your can to see if it has one of the following lot codes:

If you wish to extend the validity of your products even further, you can check out the following expiration dates: one of the samples expires in December 2022, another expires in February 2023. The last of the products has an expiration date of April 2024.

The Refund Process

Make sure you have your Har & Scalp Spray SPF 30 product at hand, as well as a photograph of the affected product or your receipt and the lot code on the bottom of your can.

After you have submitted your reimbursement request, you should receive a refund in six to eight weeks.

Is It Safe to Use Non-Recalled Products?

Youre probably wondering what the recall means for the rest of your Banana Boat sunscreen products, even if you don't have any Hair & Scalp products at home. No other Banana Boat sunscreen products are affected by this recall, and may continue to be used safely and effectively, which means you should keep lathering on the sunscreen.

The statement further clarifies that the rest of Banana Boats Hair & Scalp SPF products, other than those listed in the recall, are safe for continued use.
