When Sheree Zampino began co-parenting their son, she admits she didn't see eye-to-eye with Will Smith and his new wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
On David Yontefs Behind the Velvet Rope podcast, the entrepreneur explained that figuring out everybody's place in the blended family wasn't always easy or enjoyable.
Zampino, 54, and Will, 53, were married for three years before deciding to quit in 1995. Two years later, the actor married Jada, 50.
Zampino explained that there were times when they would disagree on how to co-exist while raising Trey, now 29.
Jada was amazing to me as long as she treats him well and was nice, according to Zampino, who has joined The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills as a friend.
She said that the host of Red Table Talk has always treated [Trey] well and loved him. Trey was just five years old when Will and Jada got married.
Zampino confessed that sometimes mothers get jealous. It's like, Im jealous of another woman because she's treating my child fairly? What? That's ridiculous! Do you want her to treat your child right?
Zampino explained that her heart is always for her child, something she learned from her own mother.
My kid comes first. He truly does, as she shared. So it's not about me anymore. [His father and I are] not together. It's not about me. It's about him.
Zampino was surprised to learn that Will and Jada shared the same perspective, which was tested when the couple welcomed their own children: son Jaden Smith, 24, and daughter Willow Smith, 21.
Then Jaden comes along, then Willow. It's all about these babies. So how do we do this where we honor them and ensure they're treated fairly, and we dont deprive them of any good thing, Zampino explained, referring to the kids' relationships with each other and with all three parental figures.
We were able to go to the airport and I'm so grateful for it, she said, although she couldnt really state why or how.
I'm grateful that we're all on the same page and on the same frequency to really want to do that, which is probably the reason why we're called to one another in this space.
Anybody could have been Treys mother. Anybody could have been Jaden and Willows mothers. However, the fact that He chose the three of us as God I think thats why we were able to do it and demonstrate to the world.
Zampino said she and the Smiths get back on track when there are unavoidable bumps along the way.
It's about the family. It's about the kids. We have a responsibility to them, she said.
Following their 1995 divorce, Zampino and Will have remained on good terms.
