Despite rumors that Greys Anatomy might be coming to an end with Season 18, ABC has other plans for the long-running medical drama. Thats right Greys Anatomy Season 19 is now up. The renewal announcement came in the middle of Season 18, and confirmed that the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital are still working.
Ellen Pompeo has signed a new one-year deal to reprise her role as Meredith Grey in Season 19, according to an ABCs press release on Monday, January 10. This came as a surprise for Greys supporters, since Pompeo has been quite open about her opinion that the show should come to an end soon. In a December 18 interview with Insider, she said she's been focusing on persuading people to let Greys go.
Pompeos new Season 19 deal will see her move from co-executive producer to executive producer, while fellow executive producer Krista Vernoff will continue to serve as showrunner. Let's dive into what fans can expect from Season 19.
The Premiere Date for Greys Anatomy Season 19
Greys Anatomy will continue to run on Thursday nights at 9 p.m. ET, following its spinoff Station 19, and the next season will premiere on October 6, 2022.
In a tweet introducing the lovely new cast on July 30, Caterina Scorsone, who plays Grey Sloans' head of neurosurgery Amelia Shepherd, announced that production was getting underway.
Season 19 of Greys Anatomy
The identities of the rotating cast members, both new and old, are always in the open, but there's no question about three doctors being on call in each new season. Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens Jr. are all set to reprise their roles as Meredith Grey, Miranda Bailey, and Richard Webber, further cementing their status as the only actors to star in every single season of the series.
In a statement about the renewal, show's creator Shonda Rhimes confirmed that the three original stars would return for Season 19. "I couldnt be happier that we get to continue telling the stories of Meredith, Bailey, Richard, and all of the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial for another season."
Camila Luddington will reprise her role as Jo Wilson, while Caterina Scorsone will reprise her role as Amelia Shepherd.
On July 19, Alexis Floyd was announced as a new regular cast member in the Shonda Rhimes 2022 fraudster miniseries Inventing Anna, where she played Anna Delveys ever-loved Neff.
Floyd will play a new surgical resident called Simone Griffin, who has a nasty personal history with Grey Sloan and a complicated family dynamic.
Simone will not be the only new character to appear in Season 19 alongside Floyd, as several other well-known actors are joining the Greys universe in pivotal roles. Glee star Harry Shum Jr. will play another first-year resident Daniel Blue Kwan, while Midori Francis will play Mika Yusada in Dash & Lily, while Niko Terho will play another first-year resident, Lucas Adams.
Terho has a rather notable Greys connection already: he starred in the Freeform rom-com Theres Something About Harry as the romantic interest of Jake Borellis character, but Borelli will not be returning for Season 19 as Dr. Levi Schmitt, but it would be a live-action reunion for the actors.
