Beyonce's seventh studio album,Renaissance, has arrived, and her Beyhive fan base has been ecstatic to see the release. However, singer Kelis is dissatisfied with the use of her music in one of the LPs songs, so much that she has labeled her actions a thief.
Through an Instagram post on a Kelis fan account pointing out a musical collaboration on the Renaissance track, Energy, the singer and chef became aware of the interpolated use of her 2003 single Milkshake.
Kelis stated that her real conflict with Beyonce was that she had sampled a record. She has copied me before, and has many other musicians. It's fine. We're all artists in an industry where there aren't that many of us. It's common decency.
Kelis continued, claiming that Beyonce's intention to include a sample from Milkshake was allegedly influenced by Pharrell being polite and Chad Hugo being unruly.
The real issue is with people like Pharrell and Chad [Hugo]. Chad is an amoeba, and it's a miracle he can keep his neck up. But Pharrell knows better. He does this stuff all the time. It's very minor, she said.
After the official release of Energy, the singer returned to Instagram to resume her rant, doubling down on everything she said in her previous video.
This was a trigger for me. Milkshake alone is one of the most licensed records of our generation, Rogers-Mora said in her second videos caption. I am a creator. I am an innovator. I have made a difference in an era of music and style that will forever be remembered.
But there are others in this industry who smile and get away with it until someone says enough is enough. So, today I'm saying it. I'm coming for what's mine, and I'm seeking reparations. Peace.
Kelis revealed her displeasure with The Neptunes with The Guardian in 2020, and claimed that she made no profit from the sales of her first two albums.
Kelis maintained that she was deceived and lied to during the recording of her debut album, Kaleidoscope.
