Fat Joeis is defending his long-time palDave Chappelleafter the LGBTQ+ community, and its supporters have protested against the Emmy-winning comedian for several controversial remarks in his comedy specials.
While out in New York, the Terror Squad head was stopped by TMZand asked about the LGBTQ+ community's recent treatment of Chappelle and shared his thoughts about their disapproval of the 48-year-old comedian.
Joe said of the LGBTQ+ community. They love him. Everyone must take the time to laugh. When we see a comedian, we look at it as fun humor laughter. Of course there are some sensitive issues that our LGBTQ community is facing, such as fear, people beating them up for no reason. All kinds of things that are happening to them unfairly. I just laugh, you know?
Joe made an extension to the notion that comedy is a relief, but that it may also evoke feelings that are still fresh.
I think comedy has always been a comfort. It always makes fun of everything. Sometimes its too soon, but other than that, I love comedy. I love to laugh and thats the beauty of comedy.
Fat Joes comments follow the cancellation of Chappelles Minneapolis show that was postponed hours before the doors opened due to reaction from supporters of the city's First Avenue venue. Due to his frequent jokes about transgender people in his latest specialThe Closer and others, the venue moved Chappelles show from First Avenue to the Minneapolis Varsity Theater.
The First Avenue team and you have worked hard to make our venues the safest spaces in the country, and we will continue to pursue our mission. We believe in diversity and the freedom of artistic expression, but in honoring that, we lost sight of the effect this would have on others.
Chappelle made a surprise appearance during the Allowed Tour featuring Kevin Hart and Chris Rock. He was greeted with great applause from the crowd as he made his entrance to Karma Police by Radiohead.
