The Biggest Character in Guardians 3: James Gunn

James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, revealed who the film's most important character is during a press conference at San Diego Comic-Con.

Gunn was unashamed in expressing his opinion on what was most important for the trilogy's conclusion, claiming that it was "being true to these characters." He even mentioned that he came back to Marvel Studios to ensure that Vol. 3 was done correctly:

"1000%, its being true to these characters." A lot of people know that after I left for a while, I decided to return. The reason I knew I had to come back was to tell the story..."

Despite the behind-the-scenes controversy, Gunn identifiedRocket Raccoonas as the person to whom he has a "special closeness."

"And in some ways, in particular, I have a special connection to Rocket's character, and I knew I needed to finish telling his story." "That was what started me on this journey, was seeing who he was, where he came from, and the thing that anchored me initially in the Guardians, which, like you said, was ten years ago this week, I went and pitched the Guardians to Kevin [Feige] and Lou [D'Esposito, the heads of Marvel, down in

Gunn was concerned that Rocket would appear to be a cartoonish character in the film, especially with the trauma surrounding it. In Vol. 3, all of that comes to fruition when Rocket realizes how special his family is after so long:

"What made me want to do it was when they told me about it, Guardians of the Galaxy, a talking raccoon." He seemed like it was gonna be like Bugs Bunny in the middle of the Avengers, but as a filmmaker I was like "Oh, yeah, thanks."

In Guardians 3, Rocket's Journey Comes to a Head

Rocket Raccoon's origins have been one of the MCU's most controversial mysteries for years, dating back to his first appearance in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. Both of his first two solo films have referenced the agony he endured before becoming the Rocket fans he is today.

In Phase 2, the original Guardians film was axed in order to make the film feel less bloated, allowing other characters like Star-Lord and Gamora to shine. Luckily, Rocket became the sequel's most important character and was placed front and center.

Rocket was actually designed by the High Evolutionary, who has now been confirmed to be a member of the cast after being rumored for most of the past couple of years. Now, the snarky trash panda will have the chance to actually meet his creator and confront his past in dramatic terms.

On May 5, 2023, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released in cinemas.
