Since it was first presented in a limited trial in 2021, the McPlant has been a disappointment in the United States. The fact that McDonald's (MCD) - Get McDonald's Corporation Report did not make the plant-based burger available across the country indicated that it always had doubts about how Americans would receive the menu item.

Beyond Meat (BYND) has partnered together to develop a Get Beyond Meat Inc. report that the plant-based burger has become popular in several countries around the globe.

In a press release back in 2021, the patty is served on a sesame seed bun with tomato, lettuce, pickles, onions, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and a slice of American cheese. "It has the iconic taste of a McDonalds burger."

The Golden Arches began testing the McPlant in a few select restaurants in November 2021 and will expand the trial to 600 locations in 2022.

McDonald's' "burger" was always a tough sell as it's not vegan (it's loaded with mayonnaise and cheese) and it's prepared on the same surface as the chain's traditional meat patties. That made it a vegan burger for those who were most certainly not strict vegetarians.

Is The McPlant Getting a Remake?

McDonald's chief executiveChris Kempczinski pressed for a profit forecast for the quarter ending in June 2022 (the supermarket chain recently raised the price of its cheeseburger in the United Kingdom for the first time in 14 years), but he avoided touching on the McPlant.

The company later confirmed to multiple media outlets that the test period had "cloned as planned."

QSR Magazine reports that the McPlant pilot program has come to an end. What that exactly translates to isn't fully defined, but it appears that the plant-based burger is working in the United States, at least for the time being.

Beyond Meat (BYND) stock - Get Beyond Meat Inc. Report, the vegetarian patties used in the McPlant, immediately tanked by more than 6% after the announcement. The alternative meat manufacturer has already had a rough year, falling by nearly 52% since the start of 2021.

So how came things got from a McPlant being released to great fanfare to the gradual fizzling out of a veggie burger that, for most fast-food chains, has long been a major component of the menu?

Don't Make Mistakes About McPlant in the Vegetarian Market.

According to a preliminary analysis from BTIG analysts Peter Saleh and Ben Parente, the McPlant was only selling about 20 sandwiches per day in many test markets in California and Texas.

In March 2022, Saleh and Parente wrote that for McPlant to become more widespread, the pricing point must be more competitive with traditional burgers, and the health and environmental benefits must be highlighted.

The failure may be attributed to the majority of Americans who still associate McDonald's with both indulgence and tradition and may be less likely to order a vegetarian burger.

The McPlant's inconsistency should not be used to discount the increasing demand for alternative meat and cheese options.

As more and more people in Western countries strive to minimize meat consumption for both health and environmental reasons, early players like Beyond are finding it difficult to stand out from the crowd of new competitors.

The company's previous attempts to rebrand itself as a healthier brand, such as short-lived salad shakers in 2000 and Premium Salads in 2003, have also failed.

The McVeggie, a corn-and-pea patty that was launched in 2012 when McDonald's opened its first vegetarian-only restaurant in India, is now part of the main menu in New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, and Hong Kong.

By 2030, the global alternative meat market is expected to exceed $24.8 billion.
