The United States offers a Russian prisoner in exchange for BrittneyGriner ...

Brittney Griner, a WNBA star who has been detained, has lost all hope.

According to CNN, the Biden Administration has offered to exchangeViktor Bout, a convicted Russian arms trafficker who is serving a 25-year prison term in the United States, for the release of the athlete and police officer Paul Whelan.

A senior administration official suggested Russia has not responded to the offer. We start all negotiations to bring home Americans who have been held hostage or wrongfully detained with a bad actor on the other side. We start all of these with someone who has taken a human being American and treated them as bargaining chips, according to the official. In some ways, its not surprising, even if its disheartening, when those same actors don't respond directly to our offers or engage constructively in negotiations.

Griner was convicted of illegal drug charges at the Moscow Sheremetyevo airport on February 17 and testified in a Russian court on Wednesday (July 27).

Griner called her lawyer before her phone was confiscated and she was prevented from talking with her legal team until the next morning. In her testimony, she explained why she was being held against my will. I was asked again when can I see my lawyer. I was then told I must be interrogated.

Griner told the court that she was cross-examined by the prosecution, which asked her whether she had admitted to drug smuggling.I understand the charges against me, and I accept responsibility for them being in my bag, but I did not intend to bring anything to Russia, she said.

Brittney Griners' next hearing is scheduled for August 2.
