Djed Spence has been signed by Tottenham Hotspur and managed to thwart interest from London rivals Chelsea in the search for his signature.

Tottenham would sign a new right wing back this summer, thanks to Antonio Contes' 3-four-3 system, which heavily relies on excellent wing back play.

Matt Doherty found some form under Conte before a season-ending injury in April, but it may not be considered the long-term solution.

Emerson Royal was only signed from Barcelona last summer, but it became apparent that he isnt suited to playing as a wing back due to his lack of end product.

Conte has to push for more signings, and he has now been given a dynamic young right wing back in Spence.

Djed Spence has been signed by Tottenham Hotspur.

Back months ago, Spence became a Tottenham's first-choice target at the right wing, but finalizing a contract was difficult.

Spurs finally got their man earlier this week after Spence was presented as a new Spurs player after some negotiations with Middlesbrough.

Spence, 21, is still young; it's been a year since Middlesbrough decided he wasn't in their plans and loaned him to Nottingham Forest.

Spence played a key role in Forests' promotion to the Premier League and has since signed for Tottenham.

Spurs will certainly wish that Spence would be their right wing back for years to come, but it could have been quite different for the England Under-21 star.

Chelsea make enquiries into signing Spence, with the intention of making him a secondary player to Reece James, according to the Athletic.

James might have been used as a right-wing back for Chelsea by Thomas Tuchel in a three-man defence.

Chelsea did not advance their move, allowing Tottenham to swoop in and bring him to North London.

As a kid, Spence was on the books of Chelsea's West London opponents Fulham, but his return to the capital takes him elsewhere.

Tottenham will now hope that Chelsea's defeat will be their gain, with Spence poised for a major role at Spurs in the future.
