Everything You Need to Know About The Game Of Thrones Prequel House Of The Dragon

Everything You Need to Know About The Game Of Thrones Prequel House Of The Dragon ...

Minor Fire & Blood book spoilers ahead. Fans of Game of Thrones, please remember to go back not back to that tense GoT series finale, but 300 years before the series ever happened. This is the location where the new GoT prequel will take place, covering the House Targaryens' history as explored in George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood book.

The time frame in question will play a major role in shaping familiar GoT characters like Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. Several levels of great, great, great, and great relatives separate the generations, though, so you may want to follow along with a Targaryen family tree (this one that DeviantArt user Maryon B. shared with Vox might help you make sense of the many complicated connections as you prepare for the release of House of the Dragons).

In the meantime, here's what we know so far about the HBO series, from its recent cast announcement to its trailer, plot details, and more.

Trailer and release date for House Of The Dragon

HBO released the official trailer for the Game of Thrones spin-off a little over a month before the House of the Dragon premieres on August 21, giving fans their first glimpse into the characters' battle for the Iron Throne.

HBO Max released a teaser trailer of the House of the Dragon on May 5, which revealed new footage and characters, hinting at how their great ambitions might lead to full-out conflict.

The first teaser for House of the Dragon was released on October 5, 2018. In addition to implying that there will be plenty of dark, royal drama in the future (Dreams did not make us kings. Dragons did).), the teaser clarified the series timeline by revealing that the show will follow the titular Targaryens 200 years before the death of the throne.

The House Of The Dragon Plot

HBO provided a vague hint that the GoT prequel would focus on House Targaryen's sweeping history (though a new trailer offered an additional hint). Maybe each installment will focus on a particular group to illustrate the larger themes at play.

Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik gave a behind-the-scenes trailer for the upcoming season, which was released on July 18th. There was a reason to tell this story, according to Condal. The idea of returning to Westeros was almost too much of a challenge, according to Sapochnik.

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen: Who Is She?

Emma DArcy portrays Princess Rhaenyra, King Visery's first-born daughter. She is described as a dragonrider and of pure Valyrian blood, which suggests a possible conflict with the heir to the throne, Prince Daemon.

Milly Alcock was announced as the princess in July 2021, claiming that the series would reveal the generations of this very complicated family in all their complexity. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sapochnik described Rhaenyra as the show's most important role, in many ways.

Rhaenyra rides dragons and serves as her fathers cupbearer in the show's world, according to DArcy. Relationships aren't necessarily the princess' favorite trait, as DArcy explains. She presses relationships to the point that they are no longer necessary, and then she fulfills the prophecy.

Prince Daemon Targaryen, Who Is He?

Prince Daemon is the younger brother of King Visery, who is depicted by The Crowns in a silver wig. According to a press release, Daemon has the true blood of the dragon. However, whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air. (Book spoiler: The prince and princess do eventually marry and continue their own branch of the Targaryen line, including Aegon III.)

The characters believe it's a gods flip of a coin that decides whether or not a Targaryen will die of when theyre born. Daemons is the family's most powerful warrior, welding the Valyrian steel sword Dark Sister and his gargantuan blood-red dragon, Caraxes. Like his rider, Caraxes is untrainable.

Who Is Lord Corlys Velaryon ("The Sea Snake")?

Steve Toussaint plays Lord of House Velaryon, a member of a Valyrian bloodline as old as House Targaryen. Nicknamed The Sea Snake for his exceptional nautical skills, Lord Corlys built his house into a powerful seat that is larger than the Lannisters and claims the world's largest navy.

Hes traveled farther than any explorer before him (which might be explored in the rumored Sea Snake prequel series), and this is why he is considered one of the most wealthy Westeros. He is considered Lord of the Tides and Master of the Driftmark, and Toussaint told Entertainment Weekly, "No one wants to f*ck with him."

According to Toussaint, his fearlessness comes from his amassed power and political connections. Despite this, his marriage remains one of his main motivations. He believes that his legacy is significant.

Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, Who Is She?

Rhaenys, Velaryon's dragon-riding wife, is dubbed The Queen Who Never Was, because assuming her role as heir to the throne was impeded by her being a woman. It was instead her cousin, Viserys.

Best described a scene between Rhaenys and her niece Rhaenyra that seemed to summarize her characters' experiences. "Men would rather put the realm to the torch than see a woman ascend the Iron Throne," said the Targaryens' right-hand woman. Unfortunately, too many top contenders failed to establish the lineage.

Rhaenys, the wife of legendary explorer Lord Corlys Velaryon, was the most powerful blood claim to the throne. Nevertheless, a council held that the throne could not be passed to a woman or through a woman to her male descendants, leaving Viserys as the next best choice.

King Viserys Targaryen: Who Is He?

Paddy Considine will play Viserys himself, a warm, kind, and decent guy [who] only desires to carry on his grandfathers legacy, according to HBO. Though good men do not necessarily make great kings, as HBO teased.

Under Viserys' rule, the country has experienced more than 70 years of peace. Most Targaryen has one to mount, but those around him continue to push the king toward conflict. Despite once mounting Balerion the Black Dread, the conqueror of Westeros, Viserys is still interested in peace.

King Viserys is aware of his family's potential to wreak havoc on the world, and he is very concerned about being remembered as a peaceful king. However, as Condal explained to Entertainment Weekly, "We're witnessing a period of time where every man has been trained for battle since birth, but battle doesn't happen."

Otto Hightower: Who Is He?

Otto Hightower, played by Rhys Ifans, is in a pretty significant position in As Hand of the King (it's one that Tyrion Lannister would hold much later). He serves his duties with integrity and sincerity, but is concerned about Daemon, who he believes is the greatest threat to the realm.

Ifans described his character to Entertainment Weekly as an intelligent, powerful political entity. It's possible that he's so worried about Daemon ascending to the throne. It's his belief that Daemon will become another tyrant like Maegor the Cruel, who reigned with unbridled abandon.

Alicent Hightower: Who Is He?

Olivia Cooke will play Alicent Hightower, Ottos' daughter, the most vengeful woman in the Seven Kingdoms. She has both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen, and her closeness to the king gives her a place of her own in the ruling family, according to HBO.

Alicent has been hermetically sealed in the kingdom, according to Entertainment Weekly. Despite her friendship, she is a rather defiant rule-follower compared to Rhaenyra's free spirit. Cooke added, "It's a really tough pill to swallow when you realize that you haven't been nurtured in the way that Rhaenyra has grown up, have everything given to her, and have had the unbridled love of her father."

Cooke mentioned that Alicent is scheming and operates as a woman always whispering into a powerful man's ear. These women have never been positively mentioned, so the fun was to look for the nuance.

Who Is Mysaria?

Sonoya Mizunos Mysaria arrived in Westeros with nothing, sold more times than she can remember, and could have wilted... but instead, she rose to become the most trusted and most unlikely friend of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne. According to fansite Westeros.org, Mysaria was a dancer who would later take on a significant intelligence role for the Targaryen family.

Ser Criston Cole: Who Is He?

Ser Criston Cole, a Dornish... common-born son of the steward of Blackhaven, is played by Fabien Frankel, who is new to the GoT family; all he has to his name is his honor and his preternatural ability with a sword. In the holiday fantasy Last Christmas, Frankel worked with one of the franchise's leading actors, Emilia Clarke.

Who Else Will Be On House Of The Dragon?

In September 2021, HBO added several additional cast members to the lineup. Ryan Corr will play Ser Harwin Breakbones Strong, the strongest man in the Seven Kingdoms. Jefferson Hall will play the twins Lord Jason Lannister and Tyland Lannister, the latter of whom is a skilled and calculated politician.

Grand Maester Mellos will be played by David Horovitch, a voice of reason and trusted advisor to King Viserys. Graham McTavishs Ser Harrold Westerling is another important figure for the king, apparently described as a paragon of courage and honor who serves on his guard.

Bill Paterson will play Lord Lyman Beesbury, the master of coin in the council under King Viserys. Gavin Spokes and Matthew Needham will play Master of Laws Lyonel Strong and his son, Larys.

The streamer added four more players in October 2021, including Wil Johnson as Ser Vaemond Velaryon, the navy commander and younger brother to the Sea Snake. John Macmillan, Theo Nate, and Savannah Steyn will play Ser Laenor, Ser Laenor, and Lady Laena, the sons and daughters of Corlys and Rhaenys.

Condal said the biggest sets Ive ever seen, the biggest locations Ive ever been on, and the biggest crews Ive ever seen. It's unbelievable. It certainly sounds as though there's room for uncountable people in this new fantasy epic.

As more information on the House of the Dragon becomes available, this post will be updated.
