DJ Merciless, from Jamaica, who is known as Leonard Bartley, has died at the age of 51.

Initial reports from Jamaican news outlets The Jamaica Observer and Caribbean National Weekly indicate that he was discovered dead in his hotel room in Kingston.

According to the Jamaica Observer, he was staying at a motel near Beechwood Avenue where he was discovered dead by hotel employees.

The dancehall legend reportedly checked into the hotel alone and complained of not feeling well, but his cause of death is still unknown.

Who was merciless?

Merciless was a reggae and dancehall artist born on July 1st, 1971 in the Turner area of Chapelton, Jamaica. He has fans across Jamaica and the world.

Dancehall is a Jamaican musical genre that began in the late 1970s and has a reggae feel. Some of the most well-known dancehall artists include Vybz Kartel, Sean Paul, and Popcaan.

Before releasing his first album Lend Out Mi Mercy in 1994, followed by his smash album Mr.Merciless in 1995, he found music success performing with sound systems in Jamaica.

Mavis was the top reggae single in Jamaica in 1995, and his other big hits include Mama Cooking, Gal Gizada, Ole Gallis, and God Alone.

Merciless has collaborated with a number of big names, including Lil John, C-Murder, Aaron Hall, and Tall Pree, and has a similar sound to Bounty Killer, whom he collaborated on a song called No One Cares in 2000.

Following man music bouts with fellow DJs such as Bernie Man and Ninjaman, the musician who was hugely popular in the nineties is also known as Warhead.
