Fremont Street is the new casino in Las Vegas ...

Downtown Vegas has a grittier reputation. Wynn Resorts (WYNN) - Get Caesars Entertainment Inc. Report

Even after the Fremont Street Experience, a massive light and sound show that takes over the whole region, tying its casinos together, was considered a lot more hazardous than the Strip.

Fremont Street was at its finest, bringing old Vegas charm to casinos like Binions and Golden Nugget, which generally offered lower table limits as well as traditional Las Vegas delights such as cheap prime rib and shrimp cocktail.

At its worst, downtown has been characterized as an area packed with buskers and street performers, some of whom were exceptional, but others, more modest.Downtown was a place you went when you wanted a cheap meal, live music, and maybe a photo session with an Elmo who was weathered or someone wearing a poor-made Optimus Prime costume.

Fremont Street had its charm, but it lacks the Strip's upscale charm, which boasts celebrity chef-led eateries, well-known musical residencies, and well-known DJs.

Circa, a new Strip-like resort casino on Fremont Street, has paved the way in changing how people perceive downtown Las Vegas.

Another major casino operator has set its sights on downtown for a major new project, with the Las Vegas Strip seemingly exploding with new casinos, arenas, and other developments.

Another New Casino in Downtown Las Vegas

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Red Rock Resorts is planning to extend its Wildfire Casino brand to Fremont Street, just south of Charleston Boulevard in the downtown area. The project will cost $750 million and cover more than 21,000 square feet on a five-acre lot.

The company has promoted its Wildfire brand as becoming more a local brand.

"We were all about convenient local gaming and personalized service, but it's the Station Casinos Boarding Pass that elevates the Wildfire experience even further," the company states on its website.

The new Wildfire on Fremont Street has been very briefed, but the company will continue to focus on locals rather than tourists.

The Review-Journal stated that Red Rock Resorts is "excited" to offer a new Wildfire casino with new amenities to local residents of downtown Las Vegas.

The company is working on a number of projects in the Las Vegas area, including the Durango Resort Casino in the Southwest Valley.

Durango is anticipated to cover 533,000 square feet and include more than 73,000 square feet of casino space, 200 hotels, restaurants, and other amenities, according to the publication.

Although no timeline for achieving that objective was given, Red Rock wants to expand its presence in the greater Las Vegas area.
