Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, has had one of the most difficult experiences in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both through on-screen trauma and behind-the-scenes difficulties. Thor has lost his parents, brother, and closest friends throughout his decade on the big screen, as well as recently suffering the pain of his failure to defeat Thanos.
Thor will be reintroduced to his old self as he returns to New Asgard and reunites with old pals like Valkyrie, Korg, and Jane Foster, who now wields his old hammer Mjolnir, turning her into the Mighty Thor.
Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarok, is expected to take the God of Thunder on a tense journey alongside Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher. But with Thor's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe still uncertain - even with rumours of a fifth entry in the series - there's no clue where the 119-minute film will lead.
Waititi appears to be hinting that the conclusion will be somewhat unexpected.
The Director of Thor 4 Teases an Unexpected Ending
Taika Waititi, the director of Thor: Love and Thunder, gave an interview with Empire Magazine, in which he promised that his latest Marvel Cinematic Universe epic would come to an end with a cool, satisfying, and unexpected result.
Waititi declared that the conclusion for his character is "so unexpected," only to return if they return with an idea that is "surprising and new to an audience:"
The conclusion of this film is amazing, so satisfying, and so unexpected for this character. Id like to leave before an audience says, "Were sick of you"... But if we come up with a concept that is new to an audience, im always open to the discussion.
The MCU director continued to state that he wants to "lean a little more with the drama," in order to make the audience "laugh and cry."
I wanted to include some of the more emotional scenes in this film a bit more. In my films, I really like when people laugh and cry, and I dont believe anyone crying in Ragnarok.
Tessa Thompson, a Valkyrie actress, gave her own opinions on Waititi's directing, saying that Love and Thunderhas "perhaps more [heart]" than any other MCU production:
Taika is a very virtuous filmmaker, and all of his works have a great deal of heart. This film has more heart than we have seen elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Natalie Portman of Jane Foster teased Thor's rekindled admiration for her scientific genius, promising "sparks will fly" as his ex-girlfriend throws a spanner in the works of his self-discovery journey:
Thor sees someone dressed like him who happens to be his ex-girlfriend. That puts a spanner in the works for his self-reconstruction.
InThor 4as Waititi explores it in "all of the different ways that can exist," as the title suggests.
"I'm trying to create something that touches on this notion of love in all of the different ways that can exist."
After Jane resurfaces with his original hammer, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige teased a surprising sub-plot in which a love triangle emerges between Thor, Mjolnir, and Stormbreaker.
There's an undercurrent of jealousy. When The Mighty Thor and Mjolnir appear, Thor's eyes begin to be diverted away from Stormbreaker, and Stormbreakers are displeased about it.
The power of love appears to be at the center ofThor: Love and Thunder. The sequel will certainly derail Thor's journey of healing and self-discovery, which will only be further hampered by Gorr the God Butcher's arrival.
What Will Thor Do After Love and Thunder?
Will Thor from Chris Hemsworth's Mighty Thor be replaced by Jane Foster's Mighty Thor? Will Christian Bale's Gorr ever live to fight another day? With the conclusion ofThor: Love and Thunder, Waititi might go in many directions.
Chris Hemsworth's contractual obligations as the God of Thunder have come to an end, while Waititi has generally shown open to direction in the fifth film in the franchise.
The portman's Mighty Thor might not be the focus of Marvel Studios' endeavors, but rather, the studio is eager to see the two co-exist. Who knows whether the duo will rekindle a romantic connection or not.
There was a time in the comics when the God of Thunder became unworthy of Mjolnir and began to go by the name Odinson. Perhaps Thor's journey of self-discovery will lead him to give up his legendary surname and continue his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Odinson.
Who knows where Thor and the Mighty Thor will go next, looking beyond Phase 4 and into Phase 5, maybe Jane Foster's Mighty Thor and Tessa Thompson's Valkyre will go to Disney+ in their own original series. The possibilities are endless.
Thor: Love and Thunder will release on Friday, July 8.
