A group of protesters spooked Nathan's hot dog eating competition on Monday, which resulted in Joey Chestnut plowing one of them to the ground. Additionally, one of the disruptors was wearing a Darth Vader mask while holding a sign that said, Expose Smithfield Death Star.
Here's all you need to know about it.
What is the meaning of the Smithfield Death Star?
Animal rights organizations Scott Gilbertson, Robert Yamada, and Josh Marxen took to the stage to present their write-up, which had Expose Smithfield's Death Star on it.
According to a report from Sporting News, the protestor was most likely referring to Smithfield Foods, an American food-processing company that produces pork. The company is headquartered in Smithfield, Virginia, and has previously been highlighted in a controversy.
The demonstrators were demonstrating their opposition to the treatment of pigs in the largest pig farm in the United States.
Operatives were sent to the farm from where the factory received pigs. According to reports, they discovered many sick, dead, and diseased piglets lying in their mothers' urine. They further discovered several adult injured pigs.
PETA has issued a statement slamming the organization for animal cruelty in the past.
Smithfield Foods issued a statement following the discovery that they used gestation crates on mother pigs.
The term death star on the sign makes a reference to the sci-fi film Stars Wars, where one of the protestors wears a Darth Vader mask.
ARRESTED: Activists who protested the #NathansHotDogEatingContest were apprehended by police. Their actions were against Nathans pork supplier, Smithfield Foods, a company implicated for animal cruelty, worker mistreatment, and pollution. Updates will be posted as the story develops.
Nathan's hot dog eating contest, who won?
Joey Chestnut won the men's division, while Miki Sudo won the women's division.
Chestnut won the championship last year, also marking this his 15th triumph.
Chestnut immediately ran up to the protestors and grabbed one of them in a chokehold.

He holds the record for eating 76 hot dogs, and he did not break his record this year.
