When I spoke to the club, the 20-year-old star explains why he chose Newcastle ...

Niklas Sule has explained why he chose to sign for Borussia Dortmund this summer despite much interest from Newcastle United, who were keen on signing the German international.

The centre-back revealed that discussions with Dortmund were the key to Sule's signing for the Bundesliga club, with the defender eager to win titles and usurp Bayern Munich at the top of German football.

Sule spent five years in Bavaria, establishing himself as one of Europe's best defenders, though injury concerns forced the 26-year-old to leave Bayern Munich this summer.

Sule chose to sign for Bayern Munich's biggest rivals in Germany, Dortmund, despite strong reports of a 20 million move. The Bundesliga giants have also signed Nico Schlotterbeck in successive transfers that might make the Black and Yellow a strong contender for the title next season.

Sule would have been an excellent signing for Newcastle this summer, but, as the defender explains, the Dortmunds' project and their future goals were simply too great to overlook for the Frankfurt-born Germany international.

Sule said: I felt a real connection with the club's ambitions, with what Ive learned in my career thus far, and what I still wish to achieve. With Borussia Dortmund, I was treated to a fantastic opportunity and I am looking forward to next season.

Sule made the correct decision to sign for Dortmund over Newcastle.

The Newcastles goal is surely one of the most exciting in football, with the Premier League side expected to challenge for titles and European silverware within the next ten years if they follow the same path as Manchester City and PSG, yet for Sule, the defender made the correct choice signing for Dortmund.

The Bundesliga giants have big ambitions ahead of the season, and while they have lost Erling Haaland this summer, the Dortmunders' transfers have been incredible, to say the least, with Sule being just the tip of the iceberg for who the German side has brought in and the possibilities with this new-look squad.
