By the end of 2022, 5G subscriptions will reach the top 1 billion people ...

This was partly due to the rapid deployment of supported devices from multiple vendors, to the rapid decrease in cost of 5G compatible devices when it comes to their early 4G counterparts, and to China''s early 5G deployments.

5G subscriptions increased by 70 million during the first quarter of this year to reach 620 million worldwide. That figure is expected to be higher by the end of 2022, with North America and North East Asia leading the charge.

The introduction of fifth-generation cell networks in 2019 would have been higher if it wasn''t for the global pandemic and conspiracy theories that ties the two, but the rollout and adoption rates would have been higher.

Ericsson believes 5G will account for 48 percent of all mobile subscriptions with 4.4 billion and become the world''s dominant mobile access technology by the end of 2027. North America is expected to have the highest 5G penetration by that point at 90 percent.

For the time being, 4G networks remain reigning supreme. During the most recent quarter, 4G subscriptions rose to about 4.9 billion and are expected to rise at five billion before starting to taper off to make it possible for 5G.
