At 2022 GracieAwards, Ava DuVernay wins the Best Family Series ...

Ava DuVernay has added a new honor to her resume on Tuesday (May 23) and the filmmaker and producer won the Best Family Series category at the 47th Annual Gracie Awards. Holly Robinson Peete attended the event at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles.

DuVernay has been awarded the Peacock reality show Home Sweet Home. She used her speech to discuss the recent mass shooting at a Uvalde, Texas elementary school, George Floyds murder by Derek Chauvin, and the war in Ukraine, according to Variety.

Because stories that we tell ourselves are so important, DuVernay said. If we can tell stories that allow us to see one other in the same way that we truly are in the most intimate spaces, then we might safeguard them so that no shootings or mass shootings would be tolerated by police.

Maybe we would protect each other so that we would not kneele on peoples necks. Maybe we would protect each other so that we won''t be facing war in multiple countries at once. If we can just see each other, understand each other, and have empathy for each other, that''s what storytelling does.

Special honors for Angie Martinez, Tamron Hall, Melissa McCarthy, Kelly Clarkson, Elle Fanning, Savannah Guthrie & Hoda Kotb, Kaitlyn Dever, Ellen K, and Dana Cortez were included in the ceremony.

In a press statement, Becky Brooks, President of the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, stated that she was honored to shine a spotlight on these women, who shared ideas that have made us laugh, cry, and everything in between. This year, we will be returning to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and are delighted to adopt an in-person format so that we can celebrate harmoniously.
