Think Twice Before You Barbeque ...

Among the well-known nitrogen, oxygen, and traces of other gases, it also contains far more harmful compounds than we could imagine. However, their formation processes are complicated and require immediate observation. Recently, researchers from the Polish Academy of Sciences, led by prof. Rafa Szmigielski, investigated the origins of nitrophenols, a cancerogenic compounds in the air that we breathe in. So today, we can look closer to why we should avoid barbeque.

We need only air. Certainly, we need water and food to thrive, but the air is also a key factor. According to textbooks, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and some other pollutants are present in the atmosphere. Because of the fact that cars, buses, and airplanes operate in large numbers, fossil-derived fuel engines do not produce only CO2 and H2O while operating. However, contaminants in the atmosphere are extremely dangerous. Here, as an effect, many harmful organic compounds are produced later or later around us. What happens when all these chemicals in the atmosphere are found?

Researchers from the Polish Academy of Sciences, led by Prof. Rafa Szmigielski, investigated the origins of the cancerogenic compounds in the atmosphere, bringing together all of the factors discussed above in their research. At first, the chamber was filled with air gases, and they then expanded it into a highly diverse laboratory chamber, corresponding to solar radiation.

Unfortunately, the results they provided were not optimistic for our health. They discovered that the soup of the compounds and particles they had placed in the chamber spontaneously began to undergo chemical reactions under the solar radiation, leading to the transformation of the nitric oxides into the nitrophenols known as harmful chemicals.

As long as these reactions occur in the laboratory chamber, we are far from the problem. Unfortunately, nitric oxides are present in the atmosphere, and their amount increases as a result of human activity. Barbeques, cars tanking, wood burning in the chimney, and grass burning in the field, all these and other activities increase the presence of nitric oxides and dust in the atmosphere, which under the solar light transform into cancerogenic compounds. Prof. Szmigielski remarks For the first time, three pure nitrophenols and their mixture on human lung cells have been shown to provide basic insight into the effect of the NPs on cell elements and processes. Besides the laboratory chamber analyzes, researchers conducted in vitro experiments examining how particular nitrophenols and their mixture work on human epithelial cells and the lung cancer cells. They also observed how these organic compounds can so effectively damage healthy cells. So, when this biological membrane is damaged even in a single spot, nitrophenols rapidly reach the cell and damage mitochondria our genuine power facility.
