Consumer spending for video games decreased by 8% from a year ago, according to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. Hardware improvements were unable to mitigate declines in content and accessories spending. Year-to-date 2022 expenditure was also 8% lower than the same period a year ago, to $18.3 billion.

The NPD conducts physical sales at retailers, but it also receives digital information directly from publishers. Not every company is involved. For example, Nintendo does not sell its first-party sales, and Activision Blizzard does not sell its Battle.net sales.
These charts are sorted by dollar sales rather than the number of units sold. This is for full-game sales and does not include in-game spending.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was the best-selling game of April 2022, but it was also the no. 2 best-selling game of 2022 year to date, according to Piscatella.
The Skywalker Saga''s growing demand enabled the game to set a new high.
According to Piscatella, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga gained the highest launch-month dollar sales for any LEGO title in history, and after one month became among the top six best-selling LEGO games to date. According to the Star Wars trilogy, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the first third-party game to rank as the best-selling title on Nintendo platforms since Monster Hunter: Rise in March 2021.
Elden Ring was the 2nd best-selling game of April 2022, according to Piscatella. Elden Ring has now become the best-selling game of the year to date, surpassing Call of Duty: Vanguard for the second year in a row, which has followed the 12-month period ended April 2022.
