If OtterTune has a way, the database administration may be less burdensome. This week, the company announced a $12 million Series A funding round to continue to expand and expand its tool that automates a lot of the processing of MySQL or PostgreSQL databases.

OtterTune wishes to say that its software will modify more than 100 different knobs or parameters for these popular open source databases. It then uses artificial intelligence algorithms to monitor the performance of the database and then propose better values for the parameters or knobs to improve performance. In one set of benchmarks, the company suggests that the database may run four times faster than the stock settings.

Andy Pavlo, the cofounder and CEO of OtterTune, has been a faculty member for the Carnegie Mellons School of Computer Science. After testing the approach in the lab, the author submitted a blog post to Amazon, which used it in a video to illustrate the power of artificial intelligence tools.

We just started getting flooded with emails from people saying, We have the exact problem. Well, give you money to fly a student out and set it up for us in our databases, according to Pavlo. Its obviously happened often enough, and we said, Okay, we have clear a signal here.

OtterTune''s control parameters are used to reorganize indexes and maintain the cache. In the past, the developers or database administrators would have to modify configuration parameters such as the buffer pool size, the effective cache size, the background writer delay, and the checkpoint completion goal. Upon completion, the database can either install them manually, or modify them further.

Small businesses will be required to pay for a dedicated database administrator. OtterTune will charge by the database they monitor. New customers can get a free sample.

Customers apologize for not knowing what is inside the databases when I make these calls. explained Pavlo. And it because they are a devop person and they gained into this role of management because they removed the short straw.

OtterTune''s artificial intelligence functions are run independently and take into account the metadata that each database uses to track performance. The system does not have access to the actual data stored inside, thus it allows them to avoid personal information.

But the difficulty is not the machine learning, right? said Pavlo. It''s really the infrastructure around collecting the data and then collecting the information from live databases to determine if youre making things better. That''s what we''ve been dealing with.

The database competition

Other database companies are also chasing performance but in different ways. Oracle, for example, prefers to sell a new version of its flagship database as autonomous. That means, it also has similar internal mechanisms for adjusting behavior to enhance performance.

Oracle also owns the original MySQL branch and has been adding proprietary features to improve tasks. Their HeatWave version has a higher memory queue, and Oracle estimates that its hosted versions will be 6.5 times faster than Amazon Redshift in some cases, more often than Amazon Aurora.

A number of startups are also developing out products on the backs of MySQL and PostgreSQL and designing them to scale quickly and absorb huge data volumes. Companies like Fly.io, Google, Yugabyte, and PlanetScale are just some who want to increase the popularity of open-source guidelines while simplifying the process of assembling large datasets.

Several of these companies are tweaking the databases and adding a new storage engine. Google''s new AlloyDB, for example, promises much faster analytical requests thanks to a new column store.

OtterTune isn''t following this path. It works immediately with stock versions running on services such as AWSs Aurora or RDS. While Amazon addresses several of the challenges of launching and configuring a server, their services do not provide the required low-level tweaking that OtterTune is capable of providing.

Tools for the future

OtterTune wants to expand its offering by taking on more than just speeding up the query processing. It wants to see other crucial factors such as index creation and updating. They also want to move into other clouds and also assist database users who are operating on their own hardware.

It will not be a simple process of pure performance or pure cost reduction, according to Pavlo. We want to start adding features so we were offering peace of mind. We can assure you that your database is running with all the best practices.
