Episode 4 of Under the Banner of Heaven finally cuts to the chase. We learn that Brendas conservative brothers-in-law found themselves caught up in Fundamentalist teachings. These extreme beliefs have now been banned from the churchs early days to justify all sorts of unsavory practices, including polygamy.

This week''s episode of Under the Banner of Heaven reveals how Joseph Smiths, the Mormon founder, adopted polygamy to the tragic death of Brenda Wright Lafferty and her daughter in 2022.

Under the Banner of Heavenis, based on the most popular Jon Krakauer book of the same name. Despite the fact that Brenda Wright Lafferty and her infant daughter Erica were murdered in 1984, Krakauer attempted to recount the dark secret history of Mormonism in America. While most mainstream Mormons today are renowned for their good health, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a past filled with bloodshed and polygamy.

Through flashbacks, Under the Banner of Heaven deals with these dark chapters in Mormon history. Non seulement does we see how Mormon founding father Joseph Smiths (Andrew Burnap) adopted polygamy rocked his marriage to Emma Smith (Tyner Rushing), but also how learning about these early teachings aided the Lafferty brothers in fundamentalism in the 1980s.

Dan Lafferty, the charming second son of the family who continues to work to meet his father''s lofty expectations, was played in Episode 3 of the series where their father Ammon (Christopher Heyerdahl) beat him in public, in front of him, aided him better understand why Dan would be seduced early by the Mormon Churchs, but banned teachings.

If your parents approve your decisions, then you need them to. Russell said, while you''ve ever known, it''s very confusing. Youd be so confused. That youd attempt to find some new kernel that you can hold onto even more, so he does. He goes down a rabbit hole that is only infinitely deep and dark. It happens when it ends up.

In Under the Banner of Heaven, Dan begins to embrace Fundamentalist teachings, including tax evasion, blood atonement, and polygamy. A shocking flashback shows matriarch Emma Smiths extreme aversion to her husbands'' new proclamation, which would give him religious recourse to open their marriage to as many women and girls as he saw fit. It''s a devastating sequence that has to show the dissolution of a love story and the start of a major religious schism in one

Under the Banner of Heaven, Tyner Rushing portrays Emma Smith, who told Decider that it was truly difficult to bring this significant historic character to life.

I just saw her as an iconic person and then we just see her and her story. So it was like how to add that depth and depth to this tiny scene? Rushing said. I just focused on prep and knowing who she is. I did my research, I read all the things, and talked to all the people I could. And then I just go for it.

But that is not the only moment in this weeks episode where we see the moment a family is unimaginably broken apart through Fundamentalist teachings. Under the Banner of Heaven Episode 4 also reveals the moment when his late Lafferty brother tried to convince him to return to mainstream Mormonism, only to discover himself seduced by Fundamentalist teachings in the process of their debate.

Ron is on top of those mountains that remain crumbling thanks to his brothers'' knowledge of scripture. So when you play it, it is not necessarily a confrontational scene. I think everyone is willing to assist, and unfortunately [Ron] realizes that his help is not required. And the mountain before he knows it is pulled away from him.

And then his brother is able to pick him up and say, well, maybe there''s another mountain you can help build. This is what Rons journey takes. He is striving to keep himself and his family safe. But his actions, which he believes will lead him to a positive point of view, are awful.

Wyatt Russell said that any great manipulator can appease the person he is attempting to bring to their side. You dont do it immediately with force and an iron fist. Great manipulators are able to convince people to come to their side by making it feel that it was their idea. And that by adopting kindness, respect, and allowing them to understand their situation. In a way that they truly understand their roles, but they are being supported.

There are skilled manipulators who excel. Dan believed in that moment that he was doing well. He was not going down that rabbit hole. He was letting things all be other peoples decisions. I dont even believe he knew where he was going.

The only thing about it is that we already know if Brenda and Ericas die.
