Gray sparked the Gayming Awards in 2019 with the goal of giving LGBTQ+ players and developers a positive audience. As a result, gaming has focused on appealing to a straight, white, male audience that includes a large part of players and people in the entertainment industry. The Gaymind Awards provides a place within the gaming industry for LGBTQ+ individuals to gain recognition.
It was a reaction to seeing other mainstream video game awards do a bit of work in celebrating diversity, but I think the medal demonstrates how much we can give it to everybody else, particularly in games, in the industry, or around the perimeter. So for us, it gives the opportunity to really dig in and celebrate queer video game excellence, whether it be in game, in the industry, or in the streaming world.
The Gayming Awards have already made strides across the gaming business through two years. EA served as the inaugural sponsor, Twitch filled that role in 2022, and many of the categories were presented by major publishers like PlayStation and Xbox. Gray claims that having Xbox and PlayStation on the same bill is almost unimaginable.
As the event enters its third year, we can expect the Gayming Awards to continue to grow. All of this, Gray hopes, will continue to continue to push progress in gaming.
