These two breakthroughs included the adoption of 3G and 4G, which were both significant catalysts in the shift away from traditional telecom services. Now, the most recent iteration of cellular technology, 5G, is designed to dramatically increase the speed and responsiveness of wireless networks.

Data transmitted over wireless broadband connections can travel at multigigabit speeds, with the potential to reach speeds of up to 20 gigabit per second by 2027. 5G subscriptions are expected to increase by about 4.4 billion, demonstrating the value and demand of the technology.

Qualcomm, the wireless technology company, has made significant advancements in mobile''s technological evolution. Were talking to 5G''s major milestone 3GPP Release-17, which will complete the first phase of the tech evolution in the 5G decade, and strengthens Release-17 as the foundation for expanding 5G beyond phones across IoT, wearables, XR, and others.

According to a press release from the company, Qualcomm Technologies was leading the charge on certain critical projects related to Release 17.

3GPP, which stands for the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, ties together to develop global protocols for 3G technology and sets standards for enhanced tech integration. Each quarter, the company meets four times a year to plan and develop new releases, aiming to improve upon previous releases and improving standardization.

What is 5G NR Release-17?

Qualcomm claims that Release-17 further improvements to the fiveG system''s foundational features, narrowing the digital divide, and broadening the 5G reach to new network topologies and use cases. Key areas of improvement include spectrum expansion, device power savings, enhanced private networks, and enhanced simple repeaters.

Release-17, according to Qualcomm, allows for a wide spectrum of devices and applications, including reduced-capability devices, non-terrestrial networks, side link expansion, broadcast/multicast expansion, and boundless extended reality.

The purpose of this study is to improve the support of Time Sensitive Communication (TSC), including enhancements for the support of deterministic applications and enhancements to IEEE Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN).
