A fan who proposed that Marvel replace with Patrick Wilson in its franchise started a firestorm of back and forth, including a strong defense of Pratt from the director.

On Saturday, Twitter user @themeghanlodon_ posted side by side photos of the two actors with the caption, "Marvel. Hear me out. Just...replace him."

Marvel. Hear me out. Just... be sure to replace him.

The Twitterverse sparked the outrage, citing his desire to replace Pratt with his alleged connection with a religious organization that supports gay conversion therapy.

James Gunn, the director of Guardians, was among those responding to his initial message: "For what? Because of your made-up, completely-false beliefs about him?" If Chris Pratt was ever named Star-Lord, then we would all be collaborating with him.

Because of your utterly dishonest beliefs about him? For something that someone else told you about him that's not true? Chris Pratt would never be replaced as Star-Lord but, if he was, we would all be going with him.

While some continued to claim that Pratt is a member of the church in question and enumerate issues with its teachings, others said that Pratt has never been identified to be a member of the church.

Gunn, a replying to the former group, wrote:

He isn't. I know the church he is currently visiting. Do you? (The answer is you didn't, but you heard from someone who met him when he went to church, so decided, "Yeah, okay, I'll believe this terrible thing I heard online about this celebrity!")

Gunn was fired on Twitter in 2018 for allegedly making inappropriate remarks about ten years ago. Pratt and his Guardians co-stars Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana all lobbied for the director, who was reinstated.
