With impressive footage from and Spider-Across the Spider-Verse, an invigorated Sony packed off a spectacular opening night show.
As he approached the studio's lineup, Sony made plenty of noise first with more than 10 minutes of Bullet Train, followed quickly by the announcement that Benito Antonio Martnez Ocasio, who is known as the global superstar Bad Bunny, will star as El Muerto, the first Latino character to direct a Marvel live-action film. "It will be thrilling to me," Bad Bunny said when he took the stage alongside Sony's Sanford Panitch. The El Muerto movie
While the majority of the studio's presentation focused on releasing exclusive footage, a confident Rothman took a quick walk down the memory lane to last year's event. 'I walked here in August and said the heart and soul of our exhibition business remain theatrical,' he said. "I don't know you're dead? Can you read? You're finished!") "Sony films did $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office during that time."
Rothman presented their work to Sony Pictures Animation, including storyboards, of the first 15 minutes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the wildly-anticipated first chapter in a two-part sequel to 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which increased animation time and earned a great animated Oscar.
Shameik Moore is set to play Miles Morales, a young Spider-Man who is transported to another world where he meets Miguel O'Hara (Hailee Steinfeld), and a new roster of Spider characters, including Spider-Woman and Jessica Drew, voiced by Issa Rae.
The clip opens in Gwen Stacy's character, with Gwen and her father, the police chief, as he receives a call. Vulture is introduced from another dimension, and Gwen's father arrives and attempts to arrest her for the murder of Peter Parker, and she removes the mask, revealing her identity. This time, Miles is introduced in a parent-teacher meeting at his school.
The sequel from a screenplay by Lord, Miller, and Justin K. Thompson was directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson. The film was set for release October 7, 2022, but the studio announced last week that it would extend the theatrical release to June 2, 2023. Spider-Man: Behind the Spider-Verse is the title of the second sequels, which is scheduled for a March 29, 2024 release.
Rothman closed the segment of the presentation: 'Watch the fuck out to the opposition.'
He was not alone in promoting Sony's commitment to theatrical. "I've spoken about Sony's commitment to protecting the exclusive theatrical window when I arrived last. I said it would flourish and it did, and we did it together," Sony Motion Pictures president John Greenstein said.
David Leitch, the "visionary director" who drives the Bullet Train, was welcomed by Greenstein. Upon taking the stage, he said that he and producer Kelly McCormick set forth with ambitious ambitions to make something "incredibly original," which would reintroduce people into the cinema. "I believe we did that."
Leitch's film, due July 29, is described as a fun, delirious action-thriller with a group of eclectic, diverse assassins, all with related yet conflicting objectives. It's a Pitt "like you've never seen him before," Leitch said. And the footage matched up that claim with Pitt walking the streets of Tokyo while speaking to Sandra Bullock's character on the phone as he details his mission to retrieve a briefcase on it.
Aaron Taylor Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry arrive on the train to rescue Logan Lerman after waking him up. After the latter wakes up, the two assassins present a brutal film about the 17 people they had to kill in order to free him. The whole 10-minute footage from Bad Bunny's intense fight set the tone for the two.
Sony's presentation shined a light on The Woman King from TriStar Pictures. Brown said she couldn't believe it was true. They were real-world Amazons, she said. They were a real-world Black Panther. She credited the Oscar, Emmy, and others.
Brown, who said it was extremely cool to be attending her first CinemaCon, applauded her as someone who is well-known for the material. Through her marriage with an in-demand actor, Prince Bythewood could "touch greatness."
Prince-Bythewood said of her star: "She is everything we believe she to be." "She kicks ass in the film."
Prince-Bythewood reveals that she would present Davis with an inaugural Trailblazer Award, noting that the trophy will be presented at CinemaCon every year. The bar is pretty elevated as Davis was welcomed to the stage with a standing ovation.
I didn't want to go through a glass to risk discomfort, failure, and exposure, Davis said in her acceptance speech. When she saw Cicely Tyson for the first time at 9 years old, she recognized her for the transformational, radical power she gave me to believe in something larger than her. I touched down and landed in me, because I wanted to do that with my work. I wanted to be able to play characters that have never been seen before in a body that was similar to mine.
Davis said that when The Woman King was brought her way, she believed it to be a "divine intervention." She called the film her "magnum opus," the same for her producer. "I felt it was the ultimate guide in developing a whole new realm of storytelling in the world." She then introduced an exclusive clip reel of never-before-seen footage that showed horribly action scenes.
The Woman King portrays Davis in the play Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, and John Boyega, who was born on September 16, and is set to premiere on September 16.
Reese Witherspoon appeared on the big-screen via a video message to introduce Where the Crawdads Sing. The film, which is set for release July 15, is based on the best-selling novel and tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. "It's a gorgeous film," Witherspoon said. "Everybody has been so great to bring this to life. "... Amazing scenery and wonderful acting
Sony ended its presentation with footage of George Tillman's next George Foreman biopic. The real Foreman made a special appearance via video and Rothman offered him the final words of the evening. "It took me a long time until I was fully confident in Tilman's hands,," Foreman said. "It takes me a long time to remember when you get knocked down, and I am thankful to you for all of them."
This week, Hollywood studios and cinema operators are convened for CinemaCon, the annual convention hosted by the National Association of Theatre Owners. This year, exhibitors will be particularly interested in learning to escape the dangers of the COVID-19 epidemic and compete with streamers.
CinemaCon was cancelled entirely in 2020, while last year's event was a slow-down version, which was canceled in late August, versus its traditional late spring slot.
This year, all five major Hollywood studios, including Lionsgate and Neon, are unveiling their upcoming slates during their time on stage inside the Colosseum at Caesars Palace.
The CinemaCon 2022 will take place from April 25 to 28.
