The Best Netflix Sci-Fi Films

The Best Netflix Sci-Fi Films ...

"Any good sci-fi movies on?" "It's always the same," says one person who asks if there's a decent science fiction film on Netflix. In no particular order, we've decided to make a list.

The Adam Project (2022)

The Adam Project isn't a perfect film, but it is perfect for those looking for a decent dinner. Ryan Reynolds is a time-traveling pilot who is working with his 12-year-old self to save the future. It's a crowdpleaser!

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Blade Runner 2049 has really no right being good. It's wild that Denis Villeneuve's somehow live up to his legacy while carving one of its own. A spectacular film.

Okja (2017)

Is Okja science fiction? It's a stretch, but it's a great film. It's a shame to watch it anyway.

Synchronic (2019)

Synchronic is a great way to say goodbye to CNET. It's a bit of a troubleshooter on Netflix, but it's also quite addictive.

The Platform (2019)

The Platform is a Spanish sci-fi horror film with a complex high concept. Prisoners at the top of the building receive a ludicrous amount of food, but others below receive their leftovers. Chaos ensues. It's not perfect, but it's still worth seeing.

Read more about it.

Don't Look Up (2021)

Is this sci-fi? I think it's sci-fi. End of discussion. Don't Look Up is far from a perfect movie. It takes a lot of time to focus on Hollywood faux-activism. It's too long and too funny to watch, but it still feels important and funny? I think Don't Look Up is a film that has had a good impact on the world and it's worth watching.

Inception (2010)

I'm going to level with you: I kinda hate Inception. I think it's a cold, pretentious film for people who are really trying to pretend they're smart. So I put it on the list. Each to their own. Thank you!

The Starship Troopers (1997)

I love this film. Starship Troopers has evolved dramatically on a whimsy surface. It's also a really fun, straightforward watch. Stay stuck in.

Gattaca (1997)

Gattaca is a true science fiction film, in its ability to eugenics, essentially, but also poses serious questions about predestination and how we can revert todeterminism. Very cool, interesting. A must watch.

Looper (2011)

Looper is a short film that helped Rian Johnson achieve the Star Wars event, which led to my personal favorite Star Wars film, The Last Jedi. Beyond that, Looper is just fantastic science fiction. It's bold with its time travel choices, and it's just a very simple one. Watch it.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut (1982)

Is there a more critically renowned science fiction film than Blade Runner? If there is, I can't think of it. Maybe the original Alien or The Thing? No, neither of them is currently on Netflix, thus Blade Runner is probably the must-watch sci-fi movie on the service.

I am your mother (2019)

I Am Mother, an Australian-made sci-fi thriller starring Hilary Swank and Rose Byrne, tells the post-apocalyptic tale of Daughter, a character raised by Mother, and a robot who is tasked with repopulation the Earth. Very tense, very strange, and very effective.

(2021) The Mitchells vs. the Machines

The Mitchells vs. The Machines is one of the most effective, most accessible kids movies of the past few years. It's the kind of film you can see together, which you should know and have had a great time watching this.

The Colony (2021)

It's quite good to see The Colony recently! It follows a very familiar trope: rich people returning to Earth years after abandoning it, to discover it overrun by new, unknown threats. The Colony is unable to subvert some of these cliches, but has a few surprisingly powerful things to say about how we dehumanize one another. It's surprisingly beneficial!

Marvel, Netflix, DC, and Others will make movies in 2022.
