Gio Lopez, a quarterback of James Clemens High School, has verbally committed to South Alabama for the class in 2023, according to the president.

Lopez, a 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, is the Jaguars' first proponent in 2023. In 2021, the left-hander was threw for 2,767 yards and 29 touchdowns as a junior, and was a starter for a Jets team that finished 10-1.

Lopez made his announcement on Twitter:

South Alabama has not signed a high school quarterback since Eli Gainey would be in the 2020 class. The Jaguars currently have four quarterbacks on scholarship: Gainey, junior Desmond Trotter, sophomore Tanner McGee, and junior Carter Bradley, a Toledo transfer.

According to 247 Sports, Lopez also has scholarship offers from Troy, UAB, Jacksonville State, and Charlotte, among others. The early signing period for the 2023 class starts on December 21.
