A young man was killed in a hail of gunfire early Friday morning in Ensley.

The victim was identified as Mickey Collins, who was 25 years old.

Just before 4 a.m., officers from the West Precinct were sent to a note of a person being shot in the 1700 block of Avenue D.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said he was discovered unresponsive in a running vehicle located on the side of the road. Collins was later detained.

At least 20 shell casings were observed around Collins' vehicle, according to investigators. Several of his relatives were at the scene and were informed there of his death.

Police are asking anyone who lives in the nearby residential area to contact police if they saw or heard anything during the shooting, according to Fitzgerald. Furthermore, investigators are asking for video surveillance from the area.

Collins is the 38th homicide in Birmingham this year. Three of those are ruled justifiable and therefore aren't deemed criminal.
