It will make me so happy to know that the Mets are honoring the greatest player in the history of the New York Mets, Jerry Koosman said. And it will make me sad to know my friend and brother won't be there. He was the very best of us. I wish he could see it.

He was the consummate pro, former Mets pitcher Jon Matlack told Post columnist Mike Vaccaro. He pitched the right way because he did everything in his life the right way. He respected people with respect. He treated them with respect. You could not ask for a better teammate or a better mentor to work with. You couldn't ask for a better role model.

ON THE GUARD

The Guardians will reintroduce themselves to Cleveland before their home game against the San Francisco Giants. It's a new beginning for the ballclub, which has given up its old name after more than 100 years, despite criticism of its insensitivity to Native Americans.

Tom Hanks, an Oscar-winning performer who made his acting debut in Cleveland in the 1970s, will pitch a ceremonial first pitch to Larry Doby Jr., his father who broke the color barrier with Cleveland 75 years ago.

Zach Plesac, the Guardian's right-hander, will then face Carlos Rodon, the Giants' lefty (0-0, 1.80).

WELCOME TO THE SHOW

MacKenzie Gore, the Padres' top pitching prospect, is planning his big league debut with a start against the World Series champion Atlanta Braves.

Gore, the 23-year-old's third pick in the 2017 draft, will take the position of left-hander Blake Snell, who is currently in the injured list with a tight left adductor.

Gore's departure in the bigs was stalled due to command problems in the minors. He had an excellent spring, with 16 strikeouts and just three walks in 12 innings.

ALL-STAR OUT

Teoscar Hernandez, a free throwback to the Blue Jays' 10-day injury list, was sacked after being picked up from a game Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. An MRI found the strain Thursday, a day before Toronto will play against Oakland.

"You never know with obliques, but I don't believe it's as bad as we expected it," says manager Charlie Montoyo.

The 29-year-old was a first-time All-Star in 2021 when he hit.296 with 32 homers, 116 RBIs, and an.870 OPS. He's finished in the top 20 of AL MVP voting each of the previous two seasons.
