GRANDVILLE, MI As state road crews add another westbound lane and resurface the highway, I-196 will see traffic shifts, lane closures, and ramp closures throughout mid-October.
The project starts Monday, April 18. During the project, ramp closures will be in place at the I-196 interchange at Chicago Drive near Lamar Park in Wyoming.
The ramps at the nearby Chicago Drive interchange in Grandville will not be affected.
Officials from the Michigan Department of Transportation say the $8.5 million project should begin by mid-October.
The project will transform the acceleration/merging lane at the Chicago Drive entrance to WB I-196 into a third lane of traffic until it ends about a mile away at the M-11 exit.
Officials at the Department of Transportation believe the new lane connection will assist with congestion and increase security.
Alongside the lane connection, MDOT will also resurface around 3.6 miles of I-196 between Market Avenue and M-11, as well as improve bridges at the Chicago Drive interchange and on the Kent Trails.
At Indian Mounds Drive, the Kent Trails pedestrian walkway will be closed and detoured north of I-196 and south of I-196 near Chicago Drive.
According to MDOT officials, road and bridge work will improve the ride quality of the roadway, prolong its extended life.
