Biden Criticized Trump For Lack Of Statements Against Lukashenko
US presidential candidate from the Democratic Party, Joe Biden, criticized his rival in the election, Donald Trump, for refusing to speak out on the events in Belarus. Mr. Biden himself called Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko an illegitimate autocrat.
"Yet President Trump refuses to speak out against Lukashenka’s actions or to offer his personal support for the pro-democracy movement," Mr. Biden said in a statement to Reuters.
The democratic candidate himself considers Mr. Lukashenko an illegitimate President. "A President who hides in fear from his citizens, who refuses to accept the will of the people," this is a sign of weakness, an illegitimate autocrat, not a strong leader," Mr. Biden said.
The US State Department has previously said that Washington does not consider Mr. Lukashenko a legitimate President. The US authorities believe that the election was unfair. Several other countries consider Mr. Lukashenko an illegitimate President.
Mr. Lukashenko was inaugurated on the morning of September 23. The ceremony was not announced anywhere; state-run Belarusian publications reported it as having already happened. On the day of the inauguration, thousands of people demonstrated across the country.
