Experts Expect That More Than 42% Of All Smartphones In The World Will Support 5G By 2024
The number of active smartphones that support 5G will reach 2.1 billion in 2023, compared to 200 million in 2020, according to a study by the analytical agency Newzoo.
According to the Agency, there are now about 4.2 billion active smartphones worldwide, and their number is growing by an average of 6% per year. By 2024, there will be 4.8 billion such devices in the world, of which 42.7% will support 5G technology.
For comparison, now only 5% of all smartphones (or 199.7 million) support fifth-generation communication networks. Thus, analysts expect that the average number of 5G-Ready smartphones will increase at least twice every year.
Newzoo notes that the active growth of the smartphone market that supports 5G began in 2019 and will continue since all the largest smartphone manufacturers have already begun to implement the technology in their flagship devices. However, analysts admit that in 2020-2021, the mass introduction of 5G may slow down due to the coronavirus pandemic and the political situation related to US sanctions against China's Huawei, which is one of the largest 5G vendors in the world.
However, in the case of large-scale implementation of 5G for smartphones, one of the main beneficiaries in Newzoo is called mobile gaming. So, in 2020, experts expect that the global mobile gaming market will amount to $77.2 billion (+13.3% by 2019), with 50.2% of revenue coming from iOS and 36.1% from Google Play. By the end of 2023, including through the introduction of 5G, the market may grow to $102.8 billion.
