Review of Steam Deck My Favorite Gaming PC ever made ...

GamesBeat Summit 2022 will be the largest event for industry leaders in gaming on April 26-28th. Reserve your spot!

Stop comparing the size to a Nintendo Switch or a special gaming handheld. Valve Software has delivered a cutting-edge handheld PC with mind-blowing capabilities at an even greater mind-blowing price. In that sense, this is a tiny gaming powerhouse that will alter my games forever.

The Steam Deck is now available for whatever reason. You had to preorder one month ago, let alone by the end of March. But the device starts at $400 and then costs $649 as you add more and faster storage and additional features. Even the base model comes with a powerful and powerful LPDDR5 memory and a slew of input options. Games are then shown on a 7-inch 1200800 screen.

I want to tell you at the top that the 800p at 7 inches is absolutely beautiful for video games, and that a higher resolution would only drain your battery faster.

The key to removing the on-paper specs is that this is a very powerful machine for its price and formfactor. Other, less-powerful handheld PCs sell for more than twice the price of the Steam Deck. Of course, these specs are true. This is because it is capable of playing even the most modern and graphically intense games.

2022 GamesBeat Summit

The Steam Deck asks a bigger question: Is it a possibility to change the relationship between people and PC gaming? The answer is a profound yes. This is the most significant advancement in PC gaming in years, and it is my favorite gaming PC ever made.

Is Steam Deck a fit for me in my life?

Even if you consider its size, the Steam Deck appears to be a sure winner. People like Steam and prefer handheld gaming. So make a handheld Steam machine, and everyone wins, right? It's actually not that straightforward.

The PC is an ancient beast in the gaming world, and it comes along with it. Valve developed a new Deck-specific version of SteamOS, which is compatible with Linux. This way, it used this platform to resolve all of the many difficulties this type of PC would encounter.

SteamOS allows you to navigate as you want. The physical controls, the touch pads, or a USB mouse and keyboard are some of the advantages of SteamOS. By taking all of your Steam options, the store, and your library all front and center.

Yes, if you stop playing in the middle of a game, may you easily suspend the system? Yes, Valve has thought of that. But what if you start playing on your PC, won't the cloud save conflict? Steam understands that is a problem, and is trying to do everything possible to alleviate those fears.

So, is there a way to start a battery on the PC? It's going to be depressing, right? Not really. Valve has done an incredible job to get developers to improve their games, and it has also built system-level capabilities to reduce framerate and your power levels.

Valve is a software company first, but it's difficult to overstate the achievement here. Steam Deck has a solution, a quality-of-life feature, and a product that makes the device feel as much as any Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch.

Is it excessively important?

The Steam Deck won't fit in your pocket, but it is even bulky in a bag. And unlike my Switch, which I take with me everywhere, the Steam Deck is much better as the device I only lug around the house. That doesn't mean it isn't portable. It may be used on road trips or train/bus rides. I'll admit that I didn't travel much in the suburbs during my life.

It will just not be the pocket PC that comes with you everywhere. And that's fine. Again, this is the world's smallest fully featured gaming PC, rather than the evolution of the Game Boy.

The Deck is striving to do everything it can do, and it is mostly successful. People were concerned about the placement of the sticks, but I promise you that this is the appropriate ergonomic design. On top of that, you get the dual touchpads, a D-pad, and two analog sticks and face buttons and gyro controls.

That's the story of the Steam Deck: it has as few compromises as possible.

I absolutely wish it would be smaller. However, I do not want a smaller Deck to the expense of its input options or, most importantly, its performance.

Steam Deck is just as adept at playing video games.

The greatest benefit to get over the size of the Steam Deck is its performance. Yes, this formfactor is so successful that we will inevitably get a Deck 2 that is thinner, lighter, and more powerful. I'm tense that I had previously ordered a system because the machine is more than powerful enough to play virtually any game right now.

For most games I tested, Steam Deck has a decent setting of around 60 frames per second. This includes even recent blockbusters such as Resident Evil Village and Hitman 3. More demanding games such as God of War or less-optimized titles like Elden Ring are closer to 45 frames per second.

On a device you can hold in your hands, Elden Ring and God of War are discussed. This is so far away from what the Switch is capable of. And even the GPD Win 3 or Aya Neo are going to be able to hit 30 percent in God of War.

The resolution of the display is only 800p. Even modern games scale down quickly at this point. It has some of the finest contrast Ive seen on a non-OLED display. However, colors appear on the high-end phone screen.

The speakers may offer an even better experience than the screen, however. Valve is unmatched in the gaming area when it comes to driving full, spacious audio. That was true with the Valve Index, and it's even better here. This is a treat and leads to an even deeper sense of immersion, which handhelds can do very well.

This is a PC, which allows you to kill your battery.

The 2018 PlayStation game God of War runs infinitely longer on Steam Deck's battery than it is on any PlayStation handheld. Thats because Sony does not make a handheld anymore. The problem is that its a miracle to get 2 hours of battery in a game that was never intended to run on a gaming device.

For Steam's most battery-intensive games, two hours is the low end. Valve will let you use your battery whatever you desire. That includes booting up the poorly-designed Elden Ring, which will drain your battery in a few minutes.

Fortunately, you get the other side of that. A game like Vampire Survivors, which boasts clever graphics, has a length of time between six and eight hours.

This is the best gaming PC ever created.

We are really caught up on boxes in the gaming world. We like our impressive desktop PCs and new-generation consoles so much that we often forget that they exist to provide us games. What the Nintendo Switch emphasized is that if people enjoy games wherever they are, it is probably more important than graphics and HDR.

Valve has reimagined it and allowed it to spread across the globe. Despite the fact that SteamOS is so adept at putting my Steam games front and center, it also allows me to get specific, granular control over the games and the system.

A handheld is more relational than a console. It is something you hold and you build a bond with. Valve has kept up its promise of providing you the best possible experience. It has also established that it supports developing an intimacy with other handheld devices.

My powerful desktop and my new consoles are fantastic, but I would give them up to keep the Steam Deck experience in my hands.

For those who preordered Steam Deck starting today, Valve provided gamesBeat with a sample unit for this review.
