The European Commission Intends To Tighten Control Over Digital Giants
The European Commission intends to strengthen its control over the world's largest digital companies, European Commissioner for the internal market Thierry Breton said.
"We need better control over these platforms," Breton told the Financial Times.
According to him, we are talking about platforms such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple.
According to the Belgian Agency Belga, by the end of this year, the European Commission will introduce new rules that will allow for better control of the activities of large platforms, including in issues such as the fight against misinformation and the protection of personal data.
These rules will not only protect consumers in the EU but also smaller competitors of digital giants. In particular, the rules may provide for sanctions if platforms force users to restrict the use of their services.
"Platforms should show more responsibility, be accountable, and more transparent. It is time to go beyond self-regulation measures," the Agency quotes Vera Yurova, Deputy President of the European Commission, who is responsible for protecting values and transparency.
