Power programs in the Birmingham metro area have won the North and South Class 7A Wrestling Super Sectional events on Saturday, with Thompson winning the South team title and defending state champion Vestavia Hills winning the North.
Thompson had 14 wrestlers in the top four and won the team title in the South Super Sectional Saturday at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery. Vestavia had 13 wrestlers in the top four and won four individual titles.
Thompson claimed 296 points to advance to the South, 94 points better than Hoover, who landed the match in Class 7A. James Latona (52-3) was among the Thompson champs, while Yanni Vines (38-3) was found at 126 pounds.
Vestavia Hills finished the North Super Sectional with 247.5 points ahead of Hewitt-Trussville with 185.5.
Thompson beat Vestavia in the AHSAA Duals Championship final last month. The two leaders will be the top contenders for the title in next weeks AHSAA Wrestling Championships at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
Vestavia (7A), Gardendale (5A-6A) and Ashville (1A-4A) have surpassed a number of state contestants last week.
Gardendale, the two-time defending 5A-6A champ, finished second in the North Super Sectional to Mortimer Jordan. The Blue Devils scored 214 points, nipping Gardendale at 213.5 Arab.
Ohatchee won the South 1A-4A with 192 points, while Ashville was second with 178. Deshler finished third with 164.5.
McAdory beat Mountain Brook to the 5A-6A title in the South with 223 points, bringing home a second-placed home for the Yellow Jackets. Hudson Waldrop (84-4) won at 126 pounds, Aiden Knight (76-3) at 170 pounds, and Savian Graham (77-12) at 182 pounds. Gray Ortis (55-1) won the 160-pound weight division.
Weaver won the 1A/4A South title with 189 points and four individual champs, including two unbeaten champions in Joshua Johannson at 25-0 in the 160-pound class and Devin Anderson at 43-0 in the 192-pound division. Cleburne County was runner-up with 169 points, and Saint James finished third with 158.
Cory Land, a senior in Moody, won the 138-pound title, making his 14-7 decision. Land is chasing a fifth state title and a fourth unbeaten season.
Jaden New, an Alexandria junior, won the 152-pound title at the 5A-6A North Super Regional. New (53-0) has won more than 150 straight matches.
Keenan Wyatt, the reigning 5A-6A champ at 152 pounds, won the 5A-6A North Super Sectional at 170 pounds. Buckhorn's William Caneer remained undefeated at 35-0 and won the 5A-6A North title.
