The modern car seat landscape is quite overwhelming for the uninitiated, but the sheer amount of choices out there means there's a car seat for all sorts of reasons.

Chicco is one of the most well-known companies in the car seat and stroller industry. The company's car seat and stroller division has a full range of features, including the KeyFit 35 ClearTex infant car seat.
The KeyFit 35 is made up of fire-resistant polyester that has never been used with chemicals, giving you a lower risk of skin reactions. The base is removable from the vehicle seat, which is now available on the KeyFit 35.

The seat is by far the lightest I've tried and is easily moved with one hand. A pair of simple LATCH hooks makes installation in either the forward facing seat- or rear facing seat position quick and painless, resulting in noticeable impressions in the upholstery.

The Graco 4Ever DLX Four-in-One is a convertible car seat that has four different uses: front and rear, and you have a high back booster and a backless booster, respectively. The 4Ever is designed to last up to ten years, covering you from the day you bring them home from the hospital to the last day they ride in a booster seat (I'm not crying, you're crying!).
The 4Ever DLX has been remodeled for my son, who is 3 years old and is happy to have some time in the works. The seat's compartment is quick to remove and the straps tighten easily once you knee into it to clean it.
The Graco 4Ever DLX Four-in-One is usually priced at around $300 and is highly worth it, especially if you intend to use it from the start of the day to grade school.
The Evenflo Gold Revolve 360 has a seat that swivels 90 degrees, allowing you to easily plop your little one in, fix their harness, then rotate and lock the seat into position.
If you're looking to keep your child from rear-facing to forward-facing, you may not need to use a seat that fits your vehicle's seat belt.
The Revolve 360 is a powerful rotating mechanism. It's not necessary to move it from car to car, but it's required to use it once more, making it easier to transport it faster and easier to maneuver. Indicators on either side of the base let you know when the seat is properly locked in position.
The Revolve 360, priced at $380, isn't cheap, but it's cheaper than the model it provides in the long run.
But the tests have not been made yet.
Mesa V2 UppaBaby
The Mesa is one of the most popular car seat companies in the premium category, and it has received numerous updates over the years, but the biggest transformation comes in early 2022 with the Mesa V2. Just as previously, the Mesa is great when paired with the UppaBaby Vista and Cruz strollers, which accept the car seat without any adapters.
ClickTight is the Britax Marathon.
The ClickTight series of convertible car seats is a modern technology that allows you to lift up the bottom of the seat like a Transformer, and pass the seat belt underneath. The system makes it easy to install the car seat using the seat belt, but requires no awkward routing of the seat belt retractor or fumbling with excess webbing.
Nuna Pipa
The Nuna Pipa is another popular premium infant car seat. It is compatible with a wide selection of strollers, including Nuna's many unique offerings. There's also a two-position canopy with a "Dream Drape," which pulls out and attaches to the bottom of the seat with magnets for full baby coverage.
Nuna Rava
The Nuna Rava is a compact convertible car seat that is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Besides being simple on the eyes, the Rava has a True Tension Door that makes installing with the vehicle seat much easier (though only in forward-facing position). The seat also has retractable side impact protection pods, designed to absorb more energy in a collision.
How did we test ourselves?
I reached out to companies to request feedback samples, although many were able to provide samples, but others were not due to the current supply chain and shipping crisis. The ones I did receive I tested for at least a week each, installed in both rear- and forward-facing positions where possible.
When it comes to evaluating a seat, I cited:
- Ease of use: How easy or difficult is it to install in my car? If there's a detachable base, how easy is it to remove the car seat and click it back in?
- Comfort: How do my kids like the seat? Is it well cushioned or rock hard? Do the materials breathe well, or are they sweat stain magnets?
- Convenience: How will this seat make my life easier? Do its features work as intended, or are they gimmicky and unnecessary?
- Price: Would I be getting my money's worth if I purchased this seat?
What is the safest car seat?
All car seats sold in the United States must pass rigorous crash-safety tests administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHSA). There is currently no rating system for child safety seats, but all models that pass the tests are deemed safe, if you do so correctly.
Safe Kids Worldwide estimates that a faulty car seat can't perform its job correctly. Once you have it in place, make sure you read the instruction manual.
Safe Kids Worldwide' coach, Cass Herring, has faced all kinds of mistakes when it comes to installing car seats.
"A few common misconceptions are incorrect use of the seat belt or lower anchor connectors and not using the tether anchor connector for forward-facing car seats," she says. "Another one is incorrect use or poor fit of the harness -- it shouldn't be too loose, twisted, or too low."
These are all simple enough errors to miss, which can lead to major problems in a collision, and why it's important to have an expert examine your car seat and examine basic safety guidelines.
What are the different types of car seats?
In addition, infant car seats are available in four major versions: infant, convertible, all-in-one, and booster. An infant car seat is rear-facing only and is suitable for your baby until they reach the height or weight limit of the seat. Infant car seats have the advantage of being able to be removed from their base and transported to a stroller.
"Many families want a travel system, and the infant car seats are compatible with the strollers in those systems," says Herring.
There are convertible car seats that can be used in rear- or forward-facing orientations and have weight ranges accommodating newborns all the way up to kindergartners. An all-in-one seat is a convertible seat with added functionality. Some turn into a high-back booster car seat, but others can be stripped down further to a backless booster for maximum service life.
"Families may start with a convertible car seat or an all-in-one car seat," says Herring. "This gives the families longer life in the seat as long as height and weight limitations are measured."
The NHTSA recommends that children aged 8 to 12 years old use a booster until they have the ability to fit in a vehicle seat belt. This means that the belt is usually close to their waist, not their stomach.
When shopping for a car seat, you should consider a few things.
Cass Herring recommends you choose a car seat that suits your specific requirements and budget. "We recommend that parents consider the harness height and features on a seat, according to the seat's manager.
Car seats should be included in your vehicle if you intend to use it in. "They may not be compatible with each vehicle or with other car seats or occupants that currently ride in the vehicle," says Herring.
If the seat is too short for the recommended amount of a car seat's footprint to sit according to the manufacturer's instructions, then you will need a seat that is compatible with the vehicle.
According to Herring, one thing to keep an eye on is ensuring that the caregiver can use it every time.
"There are a lot of seats, but no two are the same," says the author. "We all have the challenge of learning to use something new correctly, but it is important that parents look for a system that the caregivers can trust in. "Depending on how the car seat works, you may be able to check the manufacturer's manual for information.
If you have a car seat, your best advice for new parents is not to get caught up in the minutia of features when considering car seat models. But if bells and whistles aren't realistic, it's worthwhile to note that some features do add an additional layer of safety.
"There are a lot of aspects of a car seat system that relate to safety," says Herring. "The cover or padding on a car seat must meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards that relate to flame retardancy. This means it is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning.
