SpaceX Is Preparing A SN8 Starship For A Test Flight To An Altitude Of 60,000 Ft
SpaceX is preparing for a test flight to an altitude of more than 60 thousand feet, a prototype of the Starship spacecraft designed for future flights to Mars, Elon Musk tweeted.
"SN8 Starship with flaps & nosecone should be done in about a week. Then static fire, checkouts, static fire, fly to 60,000 ft & back," Musk said. According to him, SpaceX specialists will conduct several fire tests of the prototype of the ship, after which a test "flight to an altitude of 60 thousand feet and return" it to Earth will be carried out.
In early September, SpaceX conducted another flight test of the Starship prototype at a test site near Boca Chica (Texas). The ship of the SN6 modification rose to a height of 45.7 m and made a smooth landing on an asphalt platform located next to the launch table.
In May, another prototype of the Starship ship exploded during testing at a test site in the Boca Chica area. Similar explosions ended the tests of the ship in April, in February of this year, and in November of last year. In early August, the prototype spacecraft made its first successful flight, rising to an altitude of 150 meters.
The reusable Starship spacecraft is designed for flights to Mars and is designed for 100 people. Musk announced on August 31 that the first test flight of the spacecraft in low-earth orbit would probably take place in 2021.
