Reddit has moved from hosting cryptocurrency forums to engaging with NFTs.
Reddit might be the next major internet platform that enables users to create their own nonfungible tokens, or, as their profile pictures.
Twitter's Blue service started letting users last week, but for paid users, the company's efforts are not as far along, and have only progressed to a "small, internal test," according to Reddit's spokesperson.
NFTs with a list of tokens for sale called CryptoSnoos, are made from an alien mascot attached to the platform and are purchased via the Ethereum cryptocurrency.
While some users have not had access to the functionality yet, the feature would have them set their own NFTs beyond CryptoSnoos. However, it's unclear if Reddit's system would follow Twitter's example by setting special visual indicators like badges to signify the use of an NFT as a profile photo.
The introduction of CryptoSnoos in June 2021 has received a wide range of responses, from disbelief to serious interest to dismissal.
Despite the discussion, some of the Reddit NFTs were being sold for 2ether, a rate that for certain tokens created back then has ballooned to 175ether or over $435,000 today. That's more in the neighborhood of high-value NFTs sold from collections like, which is selling image tokens at a minimum of 93ether (or over $224,000 today), suggesting that Reddit might be a more NFT-friendly platform than Twitter or other online platforms.
