After the area was devastated by a storm last month, Pilgrim's Pride Corp said on Friday it would increase starting salary for employees at its Mayfield, Kentucky, manufacturing facility.
At least 64 people died in the tornadoes in Kentucky, destroyed one Pilgrim's Pride chicken hatchery, and severely damaged another that was supplied to farmers in Mayfield, a local area of 10,000.
The company negotiated a permanent salary increase with the UFCW Local 227 workers union for the Mayfield facility, which employs more than 1,500 people.
According to the organization, the total wage increase has been raised to $4.5 million on an annual basis.
The increase comes at a time when the meatpacking industry in the United States is experiencing extensive human resource shortages due to the spread of the Omicron coronavirus strain among workers.
