Is there a more surprising Times area team than Nottingham after one month of the NJSIAA boys basketball season?

With almost all of last season's Colonial Valley Conference title team scoring and minutes gone, many thought the Northstars would use 2021-22 as a rebuilding campaign, or perhaps more aptly as a base for a deep run next season.

Chris Raba, the Nottingham Head Coach, has been a key player in all of his career.

This group of sophomores and juniors has not been satisfied so far with playing for the future. Despite this, this team was very good at focusing on the present and the moment in its first nine games.

The Northstars beat Notre Dame 82-40 on Saturday, scoring 20 points, while South Hunterdon's (3-4) Tyler McCaffery added 14 points.

The Northstars beat Notre Dame 1-0 at the end of the second quarter into the first half of the fourth. Saturday, the defense fought a lot of transition baskets, especially during the third and early quarter.

We have been very good this year on defense, especially the last week, Nottingham F/C Lewis Harvey said. We dont have the players to be able to go out there and outscore teams, so our entire offense is run through our defense. We get a stop on defense, and now we are on offense. That is Nottingham basketball.

If we hold teams down to 40 points, we will win a lot of games, he said.

Nottingham had a balanced attack from its roster as it ran out to a 37-22 lead at the half. The Northstars had the advantage up to 54-22 with a 17-0 third quarter. But it was 61-22 by that point, and the Northstars had another impressive victory.

Nottingham climbs to 8-2 after a month, and is a very real threat to compete for silverware once more in 2022. Is it a year ahead of schedule? Not according to the players.

We all have to play together, Dickerson said. These are my brothers out here, and we all have one goal: to climb the table.

One game at a time. Statement season. One game at a time.
