STORIES IN CONNECTIONS IN TIME

Over his ten seasons in Buffalo, Chris Kelsay's introduction to the Bills' so-called and very one-sided divisional rivalry against the New England Patriots differed from many of the defensive end's contemporaries.

Mit a win began his career.

Kelsay will never forget his cautious comments he received shortly after the Bills' victory in 2003.

The Patriots are hosting the league (10) this week. I remember people saying, Dont get used to this, Kelsay said with a laugh.

No truer words had been heard ever.

The Patriots surpassed the Bills 31-0 in the season finale, resulting in their second of their six Super Bowl titles spanning the 2001 to 2018 seasons. The Patriots defeated Buffalo for their next 15 straight meetings.

Buffalo beat New England 34-31 in 2011 by tying a new high. Kelsay said: Oh, yeah, I played them 20 times in my career and I think I beat them twice.

Kelsay is enthralled to see signs of the tables being turned. The Bills have won three of four division titles, losing the Patriots' long standing standing on the AFC East.

Kelsay acknowledged initially having pangs of jealousy in watching the Bills enjoy success in retirement.

Over that stretch, Belichick won 35 of 40 meetings, with Brady going 32-3 (now 33-3) after he led Tampa Bay past Buffalo last month to set the NFL record for most wins against one opponent.

With Brady gone, Buffalo swept the season last year for the first time since 1999. This year, the Bills responded from an indescribable home temperature on December 6 with a three-week wait.

After the Buffalo Bills beat Buffalo 26-8 in the former American Football League's divisional playoff in 1963, the teams will compete only for the second time in the playoffs.

Sean McDermott, the Bills' coach, has dismissed whatever recent success the Bills have had by referencing the 14-10 defeat in which the Patriots attempted three passes while finishing with 222 yards rushing to counter the elements.

McDermott said he thinks he needs to look further than knowing that the team beat us here a few weeks ago.

Former Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo compared the past to a slugger in highlighting how both teams have changed. The Bills are now lead by third-year starter Josh Allen, while the Patriots are in transition under rookie Mac Jones.

Honestly, I dont really get into comparing teams, Mayo said. Every team has its own unique structure, own unique identity.

Mayo has won 14-2 over Buffalo in his eight games in New England from 2008-15.

The difference is that Mayo didnt have to endure the sometimes head-banging frustrations the Bills endured throughout the year.

The Patriots beat Buffalo 56-10 in the first half in a season-opening 25-24 defeat. Brady threw four touchdown passes to Randy Moss in the first half.

After Buffalo's victory in 2011, they were forced to drop a 21-0 lead to New England.

Kyle Williams believes that the losses are less than the wins.

Former Bills defensive tackle said: I remember more of my licks and butt-kickings I took."

Williams showed off how much effort and focus it took to beat New England if he did.

As he is with Buffalo's recent run, Williams doesn't think this team has relieved any ghosts of the Bills' past not his at least.

Im extremely proud for them and very happy, but I dont know that it really exorcises any deep-seeded Patriots' demons I have, said Williams, who had three victories against New England from 2005 to 2018. I had my opportunities. It didnt work out.

Brian Moorman, a former Punter, has taken a different approach, saying he is living through the Bills.

Im certain that, just like all Bills fans in the country, this curse has been broken by this staff and this squad, said Moorman.

Were just not competitive, were the team to beat, Moorman said, not apologizing for using the words us and we when referring to the Bills. Everybodys kind of looking up to us, and I dont think you can take it away from them. They should be proud of that and, obviously, be confident going into this match.
