On the Mackinac Bridge, a police vehicle was hit by a suspected drunk driver

MACKINAW CITY, MI A police officer was uninjured when his vehicle was hit by a suspected drunk driver on the Mackinac Bridge.

When his patrol car was hit at 7 p.m. on Thursday, the officer was assisting a motorist with a broken vehicle.

The officer parked behind the disabled vehicle with his overhead emergency lights on, but another vehicle crashed into the back of it while the officer waited for a tow truck to arrive.

At the time of the incident, the officer was in the patrol car, but was not hurt, according to police.

The suspect, a 29-year-old man from St. Ignace, and his passenger, were also uninjured.

Police have claimed that he is being charged with OWI and open intoxicants in a vehicle.

The Cheboygan County Sheriffs Department, Michigan State Police, and the Mackinac Bridge Authority have assisted the Mackinaw City Police Department.
