Brad Ausmus, the Athletics' former bench coach, has been hired by Brad Ausmus as the Athletics' replacement

This season, the Oakland Athletics have hired former manager Brad Ausmus to lead the bench.

Ausmus has five years of experience in big-league management, which should be a blessing to first-year Oakland skipper Mark Kotsay.

With the Detroit Tigers (2014-17) and Los Angeles Angels (2019), Ausmus, 52, has compiled a 386-422 record.

In 2014, he led the Tigers to a 90-72 lead, but the club was swept in three games in the AL Division Series by the Baltimore Orioles.

In Ausmus' lone season, the Angels went 72-90.

Ausmus played 18 major-league seasons (1993-2010) as a catcher for the San Diego Padres (1993-96), Tigers (1996- 1999-2000), Houston Astros (1997-98, 2001-08) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2009-10).

In 1999, Ausmus was an All-Star for the Tigers and also won three Gold Glove Awards.

Tommy Everidge has been named as a hit coach for Oakland and Chris Cron has been replaced.

Kotsay, 46, was reinstated to replace Bob Melvin, who had left the Padres for 10 1/2 seasons.
