Star Reacts to Biker Gang Disroversy in 'Book of Boba Fett"
On Friday, television critics Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen weighed in on a few of the show's very modest issues.
The Tusken Raiders were portrayed as simple-minded brutes in the Star Wars films, and both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett have been praised for handling the indigenous characters. However, the deaths drew some anger online.
The indigenous Tuskens of Tatooine are indigenous to their own cultures and I was pulling from my own culture in a way, preparing the warrior and preparing a weapon. And Boba has never experienced a real family before with the young Tuskens and the old Tuskens and protecting their land.
"We knew so little about the Tuskens and [the show] really gave them an incredible backstory, according to Wen. And [setting the bodies on fire] was part of Star Wars, with A New Hope, whether its the Jawas, when they were attacked, there is this ceremonious desire on Tatooine to burn the bodies rather than letting them lie out in the open in the desert."
A fan of the episode said it was not appropriate to have one fan similar to the Power Rangers. In the episode, a group of Tatooine street kids (including Sophie Thatcher) aid Boba Fett while riding colorful, shiny Vespa-like hover-scooters.
Morrison replied: Some of these things are out of our control. We cannot say as performers, We dont want to work with these people, thats not good enough.... They added a lot of color to it, I thought... they were great, were working hard.
The movie is a real homage to George Lucas' films, whether it be the Mods in the 1960s or the American Graffiti hot rod films. At the same time, it lends itself to learning more about Tatooine. And Sophie was a lovely human being and I always enjoyed getting to know her.
Legendary fans may be unaware of the non-Star Wars-ian color on the series.
At the age of 58, Wen was asked about being a action hero.
I like representing older, stronger females, she said. I do have a certain set of skills whether its martial arts or kickboxing or learning stunt fighting. But it used to be that when a woman reached 40 they would get put out to pasture. Im very fortunate and honored and Im going to keep doing this as long as I can.
