VENICE, 22 Dec. - Lazio finished the most successful calendar year in their Serie A history with a victory against Venezia on Wednesday, allowing for a win in Europe.

The defending champions made the champions win 24 league matches of 2021, a new club record for a calendar year. Last year they reached their eighth place ahead of winter break on 31 points, three behind fifth-placed Juventus.

Pedro Rodriguez put Maurizio Sarri's side ahead and finished by a weaving effort before Francesco Forte pushed 16th-placed Venezia towards halftime.

Francesco Acerbi restored Lazio's lead early in the second half and substitute Luis Alberto volleyed home a third at the death shortly after the sending off of Tanner Tessman, a Venedig-born substitute.

Bologna, apart from Sassuolo, stepped on to 10th place with a 3-0 win.

Riccardo Orsolini and Aaron Hickey finished well first half before Federico Santander doubled the visitors' chances.
