BERLIN, 22nd Dec, - The Omicron variant is going to become the dominant coronavirus strain within three weeks, and the country has ordered 80 million doses of this strain to be delivered in April or May, said the health officials.
The German health minister said that the offensive booster campaign is our most important building block in the fight against Omicron.
He described his advice as very high, "However, the degree of protection from severe COVID-19 diseases is extremely high" after a booster shot, "I think it goes over 90%."
However, despite the increased booster rollout, Lothar Wieler, president of the Germany's Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases said, people should limit contacts to an absolute minimum.
Christmas is not the spark that fuels the Omicron blaze, Wieler told the same news conference.
On Tuesday, German officials agreed to limit private gatherings, nightclubs, discos and ban spectators at football matches from 28. December.
Germany reported 45,659 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, 5,642 less than a week ago, and the death toll fell 510.
Lauterbach said the Omicron variant will require a fourth vaccination.
Germany ordered 80 million doses of a vaccine marketed at BioNTech, aimed specifically at the target of Omicron, for which in April or May a third could be announced, and then four million doses of a new, approved Novavy vaccine - which is much more acceptable to vaccine sceptics - and 11 million doses of the new Valneva shot, which is waiting for a marketing authorization, Lauterbach said.
The Novavax shots will arrive in January, he said.
Our standards are: ours.
