Dec 22 - A new South African study, along with data on the hospitalisations and deaths in the country's fourth wave of COVID infections, shows that the risk of disease is lower in Omicron than in the previous variants, a top scientist said Wednesday.

"South Africa is the epidemiology: Omicron behaves in less severe ways," said the professor of study, Cheryl Cohen, who is the National Institute for Common Diseases, and the authors of the new study.

"Combined, our data show a positive story with better response rates, especially for other variants," she said on a press conference with a group of NICD scientists.
