At least 728 people were injured during anti-government protests in Beirut, and 19 activists were detained. Earlier, Arab media reported 490 injured, including about 70 police officers.
An anti-government demonstration turned violent in Central Beirut on Saturday. Sami Gemayel, the leader of the opposition Kataib party, called for mass anti-government actions earlier. The protesters, in particular, accused the ruling coalition of corruption and demanded early elections and an independent investigation into the violent explosion that took place on August 4 in the port of Beirut, killing 158 people and destroying a significant part of the infrastructure of the Lebanese capital.
