Police say that man accused of home invasion attack is now charged with armed sex assault

Investigators said this week that a man already charged with sexually assaulting a lady in October was accused of a similar crime in Plainfield a few days earlier.

Terence Rhue, 22, was charged with aggravated sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated criminal sexual contact with a weapon, and two related weapon offenses for the Oct. 4 incident in Plainfield, the Union County Prosecutors Office and the Plainfield Police Department stated in a joint statement Thursday.

Police were called to a Randolph Road house following reports of a sexual assault by an armed man there, and DNA collected from the scene was processed through the office's forensic laboratory for testing, according to authorities. The analysis eventually revealed a strong match to Rhue, according to officials.

Since his arrest in October for his alleged role in a home invasion and sexual assault that occurred in Westfield on Oct. 19, Rhue has already been lodged in the Essex County Jail, the office stated.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed to support the charges filed against Rhue, video footage showed Rhue following the woman as she returned to her house from a late-morning walk and captured the license plate of the vehicle he used to escape the strike.

Investigators recovered several of the gift cards reported stolen from the house, along with the clothing Rhue was wearing at the time, when police took him into custody two days later, according to authorities. He faces charges of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, first-degree robbery, second-degree burglary, and two weapon attacks.

According to the office, a first appearance for the additional charges he is facing in the Plainfield case was scheduled for Thursday.

Anyone with information about the investigation was asked to contact Union County Prosecutor's Office detective Annie Coll at 908-347-2474 or Plainfield Police Department Detective Carlos Navarro at 908-753-3415.
